Better Wearing Tyres for 103 TDI Wagon

Hello,

I am getting to the send of my second set of tyres. They are Bridgestone RE001's. They have been good, expect that I am only going to get about 34k kms out of them. This is slightly more than the OEM RE050A's that the car came with (30k kms). I am a relatively gentle driver and am looking to get more mileage (and less rolling reistance) without losing too much performance. Does anyone have any experience with Bridgestone ER300's? Any other suggestions?

Try Michelins. I always get a good run out of the more touring focussed models.

If you want something a bit cheaper, my best mate runs TyrePower in Tauranga & swears by GT Radials.

Keep in mind that less rolling resistance generally means less grip.

Try GoodYear Eagle NCT5. Any car I see them on, the owners are happy with mileage they're getting out of them. We have them on our Golf and at 45,000km they're not even 1/2 worn.

Slightly OT but NCT were the Goodyear performance tyre when I worked for them. They were really soft. I'd go through a set in about 10,000km. Luckily I could get staff discount & a new set were about 1 days pay.

How times have changed when the NCT5 appears to be quite durable.

Does anyone have any experience with Bridgestone ER300's? Any other suggestions?

I have ER300's on my Pug 308 Touring HDi. They seems to be about 50% worn at 25,000km. They grip ok in the dry and wet..

If you are looking for mileage, steer clear of the Goodyear Eagle F1's. My old Passat tdi chewed through a set in 25000km.

After 60K on very noisy Pirelli Rosso's , have now done 15K on Michelin Pilots. Very quiet, good road holding and little wear so-far.
Came in around $1000 for the set.

Indeed - My tyre experiences seem to be contrary to every elses here!

My 2006 Focus LX came with Goodyear NCTs and they were utter crap - poor traction/braking from the word "go", ordinary grip (especially at the hint of moisture) and got VERY noisy as they wore. They did get to 60,000 kms before the noise got too much and I replaced them with a cheap set of Kuhmos KU23s which were far better in every way except wear (traded it in a few months after so I couldn't tell).

My 1995 Peugeot 306 came with the original Michelin Pilot Sports which were made in Italy, stuck like glue in all conditions while being quiet right down to the tread limit and wore out in 25,000km. These were replaced by the original Goodyear F1s which were made in Germany, damned expensive and were every bit as good as the Pilots and lasted 50,000km. After this, I had the 2nd generation Goodyear F1s which were made in Thailand and not qute as good in every way except that they lasted 60,000km at which point the car was traded in on the Focus (yep, I kept it for 11 years 'cos it was a great drive).

They must alter the tyre construction/compounds as they go along.
