B7 Passat Price Negotiations

Hi Guys,

I've started some preliminary research on the B7 Passat as I'm keen to purchase it. Not sure if I should go for the 118TSI or the 125TDI. Really up to me once I've taken both for a test drive. Anyway, I've been quoted the following on road prices:

118TSI (as is with no options): $43,777 (South Yarra VW) / $43,785 (Werribee Volkswagen)

125TDI (as is with no options): $48,902 (South Yarra VW) / $48,980 (Werribee Volkswagen)

Can I realistically aim to knock off $1000, $2000 or more off the quoted on road price?

Your advice would be most welcome before I embark on some serious negotiations.

Agreed, get another quote, when my father when to buy a Mazda, yes I know, I hang my head in shame, my brother drove him between two dealers, he was willing to pay full sticker price, in the end, he paid thousands less with a full tank of fuel. Each time he when to one place they let them know what the deal was from the other dealer and the fact that he had cash with no trade in. It takes time but can save yourself some dough. Oh, by the way, at least he still has his 1973, bay window camper sitting in the shed, just encase the Mazda ever brakes down.

Hey Transporterq, funny you should mention Mazda as I'm actually looking at trading in my current 2010 Mazda6 for the Passat. To be fair, the Mazda6 is a very characterful car with delightful steering and impressive handling; however, it is unrefined and very average on fuel ecomony (ie. 11.9 l/kms in purely urban driving - and I'm certainly not a revhead!). Yeah, I know I'm going to take a big hit depreciation wise, but so be it. I'd rather trade than sell privately as I just don't have the time to hassle with a private sale. You're right that I need another quote and I think that I should probably be looking at which dealer can give me the best changeover price. Anyway, when work eases up in a few weeks I'll go for a few test drives and start negotiations. I would prefer a dealer closer to me like Essendon, Werribee or South Yarra as I'd be taking the car to the dealer for servicing as well.

All things said, the Mazda 2 has been a good car for my Dad. I have not driven a petrol Passat, I brought a 2007, TDI sedan, second hand from a VW dealer, love it, the mileage is around 6.5 L per 100 km's in the city, 5.8 L per 100 km's on a drive from Adelaide down to Victor Harbour and back. If you know Adelaide, you have to go up one big hill, the Mazda 6 in front of me would not get out of my way, and if I learn to use the DSG gearbox I would enjoy the drive even better. Friend has a V6 all wheel drive model, not a R36, step down from it, it drives fantastically, just does not come close to my TDI in the mileage department.

Hi Guys,
Not sure if I should go for the 118TSI or the 125TDI.

I have the 118tsi in the old shape (MY10.5).

FYI I am getting 8 to 9 l/100km on my morning city commute (a bit of 70km/h roads and a dozen traffic lights). As a comparison my Pug308 HDI does the same trip around 6l/100km. I would expect you would get low 6's out of the 125TDI.

The one country trip I did in the 118tsi I got 7.5l/100km sitting on 110km/h+

Those are good figures Guthrie. Don't get me started on traffic lights in Melbourne! The reason I'm undecided over petrol or diesel is because I've never driven a diesel. Hence the need to test drive both variants.

I was keen on dealing with Siuth Yarra as bought my Jetta from them,or Camberwell as bought a Golf for my Partner from them,but ended up buying from Essendon,as their deal was BRILLIANT.
