All you folk with auto tailgates, do you find it a worthwhile option?
It's useful... it would be a lot more useful if I could close it with the same buttons I open it with though!

I like it. But it only cost us $750 more as an option when we got our car new this year. Also you can adjust the opening height, useful since our garage isn't very tall. This may be worth it alone since the normal tailgate would hit our garage door everytime. But with this I have piece of mind. This would also be good for short drivers/partners (like my wife and I!). The remote opening is nice, but nothing special. The auto close is the cool part, but you have to press the button on the tailgate. I also like that it closes smoothly and doesn't slam. Not sure about safety mechanism, like objects in the way while closing. Haven't tried this yet, not game to. Get it if you have some cash leftover or if the standard opening height could be a problem.
I guess that $750 becomes $1000 or thereabouts once LCT & S/duty are included. It's just a tiny fraction of the purchase price right? I think I'll tick that box.
I reckon it is a useful option, particularly when you have your hands full etc.
Thinking about resale value, many station wagons will start having this as standard in 3-4 years time (many already do) and so whilst it wont increase the value, it may make it easier to on sell the car.
I usually look at options in this way, to consider what someone might be looking for in 3-4 years time if they were to buy a second hand model. Thats why I usually spec at least leather, sunroof, Park Distance Control. If I had my time again with the R36 I would have specced the Satnav, Reverse Camera as well (though the first batch of R36's didnt have the Camera Fitted at the factory due to a VWA stuff up).

Confirmed Global Warming Sceptic. No Longer a VW Owner -Loving my new 2011 Range Rover Sport - bought as VW unable to provide info on the new Toureg despite it being released overseas 12 mths ago. 2008 R36 Wagon, 2006 GTI and 2004 R32 - Gone. Sorry VW, you make great cars but until you improve your customers' experiences you will lose customers
It came on mine, we love it. You can also program how far it opens when u hit the button so it wont hit the roof in you garage if required.
Gone...........R36 Icelandic Gray Wagon

I like it....it helps keep grubby finger prints off the tailgate...
I thought it was a wank until I saw my mate with his kid and the shopping use it on his Lexus. Going to the car with his hands full, he just hit the button and threw everything in the back (except the kid of course). As my wife and i are looking at kids in the next couple of years, it was a no brainer for me.
I think it can only be closed with the button on the rear door so as you cannot close it from afar and catch someone's -especially an unaccompanied child's - hand, head, other body part in the door as it closes. In otherwords, they want the person who closes it to be there supervising the action.
