What is Auto Hold, and what does setting it 'on' do?

It allows you to take your foot off the brake when stationary without having to put the hand brake on.

It's mostly useful when performing a hill start, so you don't roll back. The creep forward built into the DSG sometimes isn't enough on hills causing you to roll back.

Don't MY08s onwards have Hill Start Assist anyway?

Can't say I've ever used Auto Hold in my mum's MY07 103 TDI (and neither has she) but I can see the usefulness if you're going to be stopped on a hill at traffic lights for a while.

I'm not sure about the Hill Start assist, my 08 R36 doesn't have it.

I've only ever used the auto hold to help getting out of a tight car park on a hill, and on a boat ramp.

I have done this in my car - '09 R36. From memory you just go into the vehicle setup in the MFD and select auto hold, and then opt for the 'on' position. Even if you unselect the button near the gear select, it will come back on again when you start the car again.

Not sure if there was a difference between models (I dont think so) but it is pretty easy to locate within the MFD.

    Hope that helps....

Third option from the bottom of the main MFD menu (only when car is stationary).

I have it. I set it to "Always off" by default though and only use it when it will be an advantage, i.e. hill starts, parking etc...

So, At this point it looks like only "SOME" R36's have this option? Seems like it would be a simple software upgrade to have this option available?
