My CC has the option, and I do have it on a the moment.

However, it makes me a little uncomfortable that the rear brake lights go out when the foot is removed from the pedal. I can't see why it should be this way, and can easily imagine it contributing to an accident.

Are you sure about this? I was under the impression that the brake light stayed on.

Yes, quite sure. The dealer warned me about it when I picked up the car.

At night after I have come to a stop, if I look in the rear view mirror, I can see the reflection from the center brake-light in the parcel shelf vanish as I remove my foot from the brake.

What is Auto Hold, and what does setting it 'on' do?

It allows you to take your foot off the brake when stationary without having to put the hand brake on.

It's mostly useful when performing a hill start, so you don't roll back. The creep forward built into the DSG sometimes isn't enough on hills causing you to roll back.

Don't MY08s onwards have Hill Start Assist anyway?

Can't say I've ever used Auto Hold in my mum's MY07 103 TDI (and neither has she) but I can see the usefulness if you're going to be stopped on a hill at traffic lights for a while.

So, At this point it looks like only "SOME" R36's have this option? Seems like it would be a simple software upgrade to have this option available?

Your instrument cluster is completely different to mine. My MFD is red and the temperature and fuel guages are between the tacho and speedo.... and no "auto hold" menu in the MFD.
I defininitely have the MY09 as the MY09 comes with the RCD510 as standard.
