    Audio upgrade probably finalised

A few months back, after reading about Swallowtails audio upgrade by using the Arc Audio KS125.4 75 watts/channel amp and a set of Alpine 2 way speakers, I decided to investigate them.

I went to FHRX Studio's in Caringbah in Sydney as they were agents for install.

I did the upgrade in stages and installed the ARC Audio amp first with a set of Dynaudio X362 crossovers for the front factory speakers. This made a very worthwhile upgrade giving plenty of punch to the music and surprisingly extended bass response. The mid range and high end were still a little harsh and peaky at times, but liveable and certainly still better than standard. I also had Dynamat sound absorbtion installed in the front doors and this also makes a huge difference to the bass response and aslo deadening any reasonances.

The next upgrade was to install the Audison Bit One processor to clean up the sound and add some processor tricks to give a better sound stage and depth. This made quite a difference and made the factory speakers perform very well indeed!

The last thing done was to upgrade the speakers to Dynaudio 3 ways. What beautifully made speakers these are in flesh compared to the factory almost magnetless drivers. The drivers are the MW162 woofer, the MD142 dome midrange and the MD102 dome tweeter. Wow. These things punch you in the guts and give very extended bass response and the clarity of the midrange and high end is super clear and smooth as it gets. These speakers married to the Arc Audio and Bit One soundprocessor sound magic to say the least.

I have to mention the great work that the guys from FHRX Studio did on the car. Marty, the owner, and Paul and Daniel are fantastic installers and really know their stuff. They did a brilliant job of installing all my gear and getting it to work perfectly and look great. The Dynaudio midrange and tweaters looked like they weren't going to fit in, but they applied some logic and got them to fit without hacking into any of the metal work or plastic moulding, so to re-install factory will be a breeze.

During my many visits there, the guys have been working on some very exotic cars and exotic sound systems. They were working on a Lamborghini Guillardo, a Lotus Exige and various other high end autos. Marty was showing me an install he has to do on an upcoming BMW that looks like it is going to run into $100,000 or more!! Marty also writes for some of the in-car audio mags, so he has got form.

Anyway, I can't speak highly enough of their work. His pricing was very good also.

My last possible upgrade may be to use a Arc Audio KS125.2 (70watts/ channel two channel amp) just to run the rear speakers (for fill sound) and bridge the Arc Audio KS125.4 (75 watts/ channel 4 channel amp) to give the amp 250watts/channel and give the Dynaudio speakers some real control!! Although, Marty has put down $100 betting that I will end up putting in a subwoofer.

Hi Lance, that looks like a very nice set up. Well thought out- I like the way you took several steps to arrive there. And it appears you have not finished yet...

One thing a little unclear to me is if the rear speakers are currently connected or not. Is the amp in two channel mode, driving the six speakers up front?

I'd like to pop in some time in the new year, once the dust has settled, and have a little listen. I almost ordered the factory Dynaudio, but decided I'd do my own upgrade or maybe your upgrade. You sound suitably impressed.

BTW. went to ECS last week- the alignment was spot on.

Great to hear about your alignment.

The Arc Audio Amp is a 4 channel amp and therefore drives the front 2 channels left and right and the rear 2 channels left and right. What I am thinking of doing is getting another Arc Audio amp, the 2 channel version, the Arc Audio KS125.2, and running the rears of that. I will then bridge the 4 channels of the Arc Audio KS125.4 into 2 channels to obtain about 250watts rms into the 2 channels.

One of the reasons for me getting the standard audio system in the R36 was because I didn't want to spend big$ on the Dynaudio and then find that I wanted to upgrade it anyway. As it is, I have only spent about $1,000 more than the Dynaudio and it will probably sound better.

Hey Lance, did you check out my upgrade @ photobucket.com/rf4motion. It maight give you some encouragement to add a woofer. Nothing crazy, just a 10" shallow to handle 60hz and below, the fronts can easily handle full range but I have them crossed at 60hz.

sounds impressive, i was actually chatting with Marty about your car a couple of weeks ago. FHRX did my BMW earlier this year and now they are scheduled to do the R36 on the 4th. My setup is very similar.

Arc Audio KS125.2 for rear speakers,300.4 and 300.2 for the fronts and a 500.1 for the Sub.

Speakers will be Dynaudio Esotar 650 440 and 110 for the front rear speakers will be stock and my Focal 21Wx up the back if it fits if not ill have to search for another Sub. All run by the Audison BitOne. Optima Yellowtop as a battery replacement.

Id really like to hear your car and see how it sounds, let me know next time your down at FHRX

Wow, that's really impressive looking gear, 111.

I am sure that my system isn't in the same league as yours, but for a system that "blends in" and looks standard, I am very happy with my set up.

Marty sure knows his stuff and is a really good guy.
