D1S 35w stands for a 35watt bulb with a D1S fitting. Obviously that is where the bulb lives in behind that cover but i am not an expert on this so dont hold me to it
Passat R36! thanks for your reply. I was a bit confused as I expected only one ballast as you mentioned.
However Pic 3's cover says D1S 35W on it so I was thinking it might be something that is required in the function of the ballast???

Yep thats why I was thinking it is some sort of assisting module to the ballast.
Ill hold out for some one who has had to replace a ballast or mucked around with the lights to clarify this!
as said, the VW repair manual says the ballast behind the big cover...
why don't you open both covers to have a look?
