Ive had a 2002 V6 Wagon for just over a year now.

1.8t look out for oil sludge. Make sure oil has been changed regularly if neglected sludge can form and damages engine.

2.8 v6 oil leaks around the heads. some seals are easy some a bit more challenging.

look out for torque converter shudder or vibration.

make sure the area around the battery is clean so that the drains here are not blocked. This causes water to leak into the interior and can damage the CCM and corrode wires. Check the passenger and driver carpets for dampness or signs of water.

The door locks are the same as mk4's so check that they are all working reliably.

Front suspension bushes and control arms.

Overall I have been really happy with my B5. I've had a fair share of things to fix up but i knew that when i bought the car and was happy to do the work myself. The best place for information for me has been passatworld.com or vwvortex they also have pretty detailed buyers guides. Also look at the sticky b5 guide.
