we are getting used to the alltrack on its first long trip.
the kids like the panorama roof (it really is 95% for the rear seat passengers) the sunshade is adequate in the worst midday sun, not sure about January though! you can drive with it open at 100 without it being too nuts.
there is the common slight cheap sounding rattle on rough roads from the faux aluminium dash trim, doesn't bother me too much as a rough road is noisy anyway.
the coasting function is smarter than I thought, if you brake, it switches to engine braking. Unfortunately using cruise control turns it off. it works best in 80kmh in flowing city motorways, you can glide though traffic with the motor very often at idle. (At 110 there is quite a lag when you get back on the gas as the rpm goes from 800 to 2200)
consumption for armidale to Brisbane came out to be 6.0/100km, for sydney to armidale via thunderbolts way, (mountainous), 7.1/100km. I think very high 5s indicated would be possible on the highway - but only barely. 1000 per tank is possible for highway.
the nav time estimate is braindead, it has three settings for average speed and on its fastest, it's too slow for country driving, so it gives a hopelessly late arrival time. Other than that its cool, if you guys think the vw nav system is bad, try the mercedes "command" nav system. wow, is it appalling!
the steering feel is good, (but then my octavia steering was inert). The car feels planted.
I never really had the desire to use the paddles: It's a diesel.. they are really just to set a gear for steep descents. Sports mode however is good, it isn't ridiculous like earlier S dsg boxes holding every gear nearly to redline even at partial throttle.
cruise control doesn't brake to hold speed
despite some sections of truly awful road - including a literal jump where scraped off tarmac transitioned to blacktop - the suspension always felt like it had more travel to give.
the sport drivers seat is comfortable but a little thin - mainly a problem of feeling every toe of the bored six year old behind me. The seat heaters are fast and more than hot enough.
the ac on auto doesn't spread the air to the footwells instead pumps it out the dash vents, but you can press down and front both on to get air everywhere (but then auto goes off).
biggest plus? the wife likes it.
it is a bit of a German Camry, tis true. if you could get a Camry wagon. in diesel. With a dsg. and 4wd. With suspension lift. And nicer interior materials..
