There's a huge difference between early VW models and those built later in the series I have found. My 2006 Passat didn't give me many problems but just looking at the 2011 models everything looks more solid and the bugs have been ironed out of the software etc.
Just traded my Passat in on a Skoda. Got a very good deal. The Skoda is slightly older VW tech (manual handbrake etc.) but still advanced compared to most cars out there. Everything fits together well and is bug free (so far!). BTW got $25,000 trade in.
