2008 Passat R36 Sedan

Hi folks,

I'm seeking a some advice in the form of a 'pre purchase' type guide for a 2008 R36 with approx 125,000 km.

Just the usual stuff please, like what to look for, known gremlins etc

Also, are there any owners here that could shed some light on the running costs, pro and cons, servicing, reliability etc of these cars please?

Look everything : transmission, diff, oil leak, water leak, heather core, engine lights, abs lights, log book history, accident history (auction) ...

Maybe looking at a MY09 upgrade (white MFD) at a low km would be a better deal (imo)...
Suggest one with a valid balance of Extended warranty is a good idea since the parts are expensive if faulty & need repairs.

Servicing, I use an independant specialist so servicing costs are low.

Mine is only at 40k so can't comment on the running cost/problems past that from experience.
But overall the car has never given me any issues since owning it for 3yr now.

just make sure that it has been serviced regularly as per the schedule and that it has had its appropriate DSG servicing. otherwise the usual stuff (ie condition, accident damage, money owing etc)

OEM navigation can be purchased aftermarket for <$1500 so don't worry about that

Haven't seen too much go wrong with R36's, just the usual Passat stuff E.G: Handbreak switches etc. As previously mentioned here ensure all the servicing is up to date, DSG and Haldex included... Also ensure the Diff has not been drained then the Haldex filled up during a Haldex Service, seen it happen too many times

Also maybe a good idea to check each coil pack (wiring to them) ensure the clips for the connectors haven't been broken off during a spark plug service, seen idiots many times also use a flat head screwdriver to remove them - a 'ok' practice, if your not a retard and manage NOT to snap the clips, making the job a c*** for the next Technician... Have replaced a timing chain on one before due to it being noisey, might be something to check as it get's expensive/is a c*** of a job as its on the gearbox side = gearbox off, which makes the labour price quite extensive for a already labour extensive job.

Apart from that just have a good look at it, make sure everything is in order and enjoy. All the best.
