2002/2003 v6 Passat Station Wagon Auto

    Hi Volks

I am hoping you fellow VW owners can help me or more precisely a mate of min who is about to buy a 2002/2003 v6 Passat Station Wagon Auto.

What should he look out for?

What V6 does this model use?

He mentioned it was noisy in the back (road noise but I suggested he have the bearings checked) - is road noise typical in this model?

What are the servicing costs for this vehicle - Reasonable or expensive?

    Thanks for your help.

Generally for the B5.5 Passat of that age, your mate should check the suspension, the front control arms and CV boots may need renewal.

Am not familiar with the V6 engine, some bros here should be able to chime in.

Not sure what the noise from the rear can be as the car is generally well built, and do not usually develop loud noises. If the car is a 4-motion, it may be the rear suspension components.

The noise from the rear could be just road roar from the tyres on coarse aggregate gravel. Try the car on some really smooth hotmix and see if it is still noisy. Different tyres and tyre pressures can make a big difference on VAG cars. Wagons tend to be noisier than sedan/hatches dues to the extra load space.

Thanks Sci and Greg - the advice is appreciated. I've given a link to my friend; hopefully he will buy and become a member too
