1999 B5 Passat battery going flat over night?

I recently brought my wife a 10/99 built 2.8 V6 manual Passat, the problem is that it has no remotes just the one key and when you turn off the ignition and lock the doors the instruments (klm's) and stereo will stay on. Do I need to use a remote to shut the car off properly or is there something deeper wrong with the car?
I have purchased two new flip key remotes but it will be at least week before they arrive from the states.
    Thanks for any help Pat.
