I took up Sharkies generous offer and drove home today (after watching Casey clean up in the MotoGP) with this installed:
a big difference from this (not my car obviously, but same wheel):
Sharkie had it installed and coded in a flash. Worked straight up! Great having the flappy paddles as I can now drop down a gear or two when I need it without having to stuff around with gear stick. Good thing is (not having had a DSG before, so I wasn't aware of) but it will revert back to whatever mode I had it in after about 10 seconds (unless I keep changing gears). Of course if I was in manual mode it doesn't.
Other advantage is size and feel of the wheel - much thicker and better contoured. The paddles are in just the right position and just the right size too.
We also tried disabling the the Stop/Start mode, but for some reason it won't take. Tried twice and it's still working. Also activiated the auto windows up when it detects rain too - very handy when I leave the windows down in summer at work and then forget about it as the storm hits.
So with Casey winning the 2012 MotoGP at home, and all this good stuff on the Passat, had a really great weekend. Thanks Sharkie for your time and help- much appreciated!
Next weekend will be the Provent install!
Nice work John and Johan! What car is that wheel out of and was it an easy install, any issues?
2008 VRS Wagon. Yellow, very yellow!
Forever blowing bubbles.
I have a baaaad case of steering wheel envy....
(spome body please tell me the "Sports Pack" wheel looks like that... rather than a boggo wheel with paddles)
Having a Gap Year!!!!
what next?... what next?
* MY12 B7 Passat V6 4-motion Highline wagon....
* Sport pack (Kansas wheels) - Active cruise City EB - Driver Assist Vis pack - Auto tailgate - Candy White with dark tint.
I picked up my TDI Highline Wagon from David at Reflect Effect today after dropping it off to him Thursday.
I am happy to report a positive experience. He is young, enthusiastic & obviously takes pride in his work. I had the car & wheels opti coated, the interior treated, windows tinted and the 3M venture shield applied front, back and aft the front wheels. Came to a shade over 2k which, while not cheap, isn't over the odds either. All in all it seems about right: the 3M product appears labour intensive and expensive wherever you get it.
It was good he had a workshop. Shows commitment.
I'll be a repeat customer.
Nice to see a young bloke working hard and giving it a go. While new here, I encourage other owners to consider his services.
Well I should explain that all the cars I've owned are lowered, but I haven't bought 2 of the same product, still going through all the manufacturers and their different ranges.
The b6 wagon I had was a 2.0TFSI with sport pack from factory, which had 15mm lower and stiffer springs, but stock dampers. It resulted in a rather floaty ride from factory which was stiff over bumps at the same time.
The ECS Tuning kit dropped it a further 15-20mm, which was the perfect ride height in my opinion. I'm having trouble finding a picture of it at the moment... but on the stock 18x8 Chicago wheels it looked great. It handled like a GTI wagon, but it also highlighted how little side support the standard Passat seats had and soon the occupants were getting thrown around inside.
We had no problem with the ride quality. It doesn't jump around on little bumps like a GTI does, and it made the car very enjoyable to drive. We took it down to drive around Tasmania in December and back. On the way back we broke the exhaust off its turbo flange just before we boarded the ferry.
700 USD bought us a matched spring and shock combo kit by H&R, doesn't get any better in terms of value for money! It rides a lot better than my wife's Eos which is on H&R springs with Koni FSD shocks (the gold ones). I would recommend it to anyone, but I have had 1 or 2 potential buyers comment that the car was too low and sporty - not the typical passat owner's priorities I guess. My car didn't have adaptive chassis control
John the interior is beautiful! I must find a chance to come and check it out one day. I had a mk6 GTI with DSG to use over the weekend - agree with your points on the steering wheel!
