thanks DkN. yes meant Nm, not kW.

Custom Code do not identify any mods necessary for their Phase 1 tune which states these big figures: (Custom-Code - The Latest Innovation in Serial Port Chip Tuning Technology. Remap VW - Audi - Seat - Skoda - Phase One - Generic Remap ). However, the Phase 2 map does list some necessary mods as you mention.

Interesting around the DSG remap and implications on claimed torque gains. A quick search revealed this mod. So in effect the Nm claims from both CC and Oetttinger are pretty misleading in real life if you have a DSG - as I think you're rightly saying that you need a DSG remap to actually acheive these torque gains. This is not mentioned anywhere obvious on either company's sites. I know CC does not include a DSG remap in their pricing, I wonder if Oettinger do given the extra cost?

Either way, I would need some real clarificiation around these claims now. Thanks for the heads-up.

CC gives a range of achievable power because some people flashing stage 1 already have minor mods (in particular a downpipe) which would result in bigger gains. It is by no means necessary for stage 1 tuning, it would just improve the gains and ready your car for stage 2. So, a bone stock car flashed with stage 1 would be towards the lower end of the claimed power.

The ECU upgrades are only for the ECU. They apply to both manual and DSG cars, so a manual would see the full gain to 474Nm - it's not an ECU limitation so they don't usually mention it.

I don't believe Oettinger has a DSG flash, it is completely different from an ECU map. At the moment the most viable options are probably HPA or Custom Code, HPA is more expensive but they were the first to develop a DSG tune and have more experience (not to say their tune is necessarily better). These days a few other tuners are coming out with DSG tunes too, but there's not much feedback on them. It would cost roughly the same as an ECU tune, or a little less. Since you're in QLD I'd say stick with Gavin for a CC DSG tune, if you want to get one.

I think you will find that presently the only companies doing DSG tunes for post 2009 vehicles are HPA or HGP, and even then, not for all 2011 / 12 cars (Fact).

The Torque limiter (we call it the torque manager) changes how the torque is delivered, not the maximum it can, so its a "myth" about maximum torque in that respect. We have run stage 3 cars with almost double standard torque through standard gearboxes (manual & Auto) and the transmitted number is the same. (see MK5 thread for stage 3 DSG).

The "Torque Manager" does other things, like prevent shock loaded (how quick the torque is applied to the gearbox) to prevent breakages and assist in traction control.

A DSG flash is great for different reasons, but as far as stage 1 or stage 2 tuning, torque is not an issue at all.

I have heard that some parameters of the DSG including the torque limiter / manager can be modified with an ECU tune, but that wouldn't change the fact that a stock DSG is limited / managed /whatever you want to call it, to 350Nm, so I wouldn't call it a myth - the limit, like many other software limits on a car, can be modified, that is all. Through a DSG tune it is claimed that by properly tuning the gearbox the torque limit is raised "safely" because the gearbox is properly calibrated to handle the extra torque. Arguably it's quite possible that for a stage 1 tune, ECU modification of the torque manager without modifying the DSG map is sufficient, but that's a decision the buyer would have to make unless you can show some evidence.

Bottom line, stock gearbox = 350Nm limit, APR tune can get around the limit but not modify the DSG map itself, with a proper DSG map it would cost more but arguably be done "properly". I understand manufacturers employ conservative limits, but if the DSG is rated at 350Nm I wouldn't go around trying to force 500Nm on it without making sure the gearbox is tuned to handle it.

Thanks Dkn, I won't be pushing it to 500. TBH I'd prefer a remap that gave me bigger power gains rather than more torque.
