hmmm interesting - because when I picked up my car from the same dealer and they did the whole introduce the service department thing - the service manager who was on duty definitely said that minor services like the first one are around $200 - if you want to do just an oil and filter change it costs around $75.

Barloworld Moorabbin is my local dealer as well - and my car is due in the next few weeks - will see what I get stung for...

Dealers will always be dearer. I prefer to avoid arguments during the warranty period by only allowing the dealer to work on the car.

Even though the dealers cant refuse a claim under warranty if another licenced motor repairer has worked on the car, I would rather avoid the argument altogether.

My first service (15k) was with Barloworld Mascot and was $260 including a loan car - with fleet discount.

Yep, you were stung... the most I've paid for a service was about $380 for the 30,000km service, the recent 45,000km was around $270 in Brisbane.. can't remember about the 15,000km, but think it was only about $200.

If you think $450 is expensive. Just wait till your 60k service.

I had my V6 done at Barloworld Glen Waverley just after Christmas for $1500 Thank goodness it was on novated lease and I get to claim back the 10% GST.
I was asked to change my brakes as they have about 20% left. The front rotors need to be changed with the pads. Went to Volksaffair to have the rear changed and was informed the front have another 5months left.
Just waiting for my warranty to expire before I take it to an indie..although the VW dealer is 5mins from my house.

I don't think it's expensive. It's just too much for what it is at 15,000km.

$1500 at 60,000km is money well spent though... Not very much either when you consider the cost of the car to start with.

Did some ringing around in Melbourne for the R36 Passat 15k service:

    Ferntree Gully $342
    Hawthorn $390
    Essendon $374
    Glen Waverley $390
    South Yarra $390
    Mornington $395
    Berwick $395

    Independents....

Volkspower $350 if providing own oil. Didnt ask with oil as i usually provide my own
    Richmond Motors $295
    Ultra tune: $182

<shudder> I wouldn't take my Billy Cart to Ultra tune.

I agree that $400 is a bit steep and I am all for looking at a good deal. I hate being ripped off.

But lets look at that $400 that's 2.66 cents for every KM you drive it.
By saving $120 and risking some bozzo at Ultra tune do it you are saving yourself less than 1 cent per KM.

Is saving 1 cent a KM worth the risk!

You could save that much by driving slow, avoiding peak hour traffic or not driving it at all.

Mind you all of which is point because the bad news is that the thing is depreciating quicker than that anyway buy about 500%!!

Lets assume you get a great trade after 4 years of 50% and you have done the average of say 80,000km.

Your $35,000 (Assuming you paid around $70K) in depreciation works out to be nearly 48 cents for each and every km you drive it. Yes yes, some will do less km (which makes the depreciation higher unless you get a better trade) but either way the biggest cost to all of us is depreciation!

Makes that 1 cent really seem pointless now dont you think?

    APOM, Couldn't agree more.
Whilst the price is more like it, I cant bring myself to trust them.

However, it goes to show how much you are being ripped off by dealer servicing. I think I will tell my local dealer to match the best VW price $342 or just take it to Ferntree Gully.

When all they are really doing is getting some apprentice to change the oil and filters and then do a "check over", $400 is insane!

oil is not cheap though even if you buy it yourself - $88 for 5 litres of Castrol SLX prof for diesel spec (I am sure they buy cheaper in bulk though) then you add labour at what $100 per hour, then all the other costs, not that I am defending the dealer of course. Essendon are competitive on price and happy with the service so far plus free loan car except for petrol if you ask nicely Also as an aside any dealer will do free oil top ups while under warranty I have already been back twice. Looks like my car is living up to imy username!!! After extended warranty expires will go independent only thing that worries me is to do the rear brake pad changes you need vagcom to release the brake calipers. Also DSG oil changes might be best left to someone with experience. The price is not cheap but also the service intervals are higher at 15,000km than a lot of Aussie of Japanese cars, my bro in laws Subaru (they are not cheap either) is on 7500km!!! If you buy Euro you ahve to be prepared for some things to be a bit more expensive. The amount of technology and complexity of modern cars has increased a lot, I remember dad showing me how to change the points on the distributor on my first car!!! having said that can do most things on my wife's A class including the spark plugs thanks to the wonders of the internet, just need someone (friend has one) for any diagnostics etc. Unless you have any problems most things are only fluid changes etc or brakes. Hwo much do some of you guys value you time at per hour, plus if you f.. it up no re-course if the dealer does you can ask them to rectify. Oh what a wonderful world...
