T-ROC recommended Premium Unleaded Fuel - RON 95 or RON 98?

    Hi Guys,

Bought the missus a TROC recently. Have been using RON 98 for the first 2 months of ownership. She's been asking about whether she could fill it with RON 95. I never really thought about it, have always been using RON 98 for my GTI. Researched the fuel type that could be used on the TROC and websites are saying Premium Unleaded Fuel which is either RON95 or RON98. I've read that Australia has a higher sulphur content for lower octane fuels so it is better to stay at RON98 or it is better to go to RON95 and save a few bucks?

Have a look at the fuel flap - most say 95 RON as a minimum. Im not sure if the new T-Roc is any different, but the fuel flap and/or owners manual will tell you.

"Australia’s fuel quality standards currently allow up to 150 parts per million of sulfur in regular unleaded petrol, and 50 parts per million of sulfur in premium unleaded petrol."

"Premium" includes both 95RON and 98RON. A 'Style' requires 95 RON minimum. The only T-Roc which requires 98RON minimum is the T-Roc R.

If you are currently using 98RON than keep using it, yes you can lower that to 95RON and most likely not notice any difference but best practice is to use the best fuel you can afford.

There is some talk that higher RON fuels give better mileage and have better performing cleaning additives but that is subjective.

Even in the Style (1.4 110TSI) you should be running 98 and for only about $5 more per tank the extra protection, slightly more power and the few more km you will get out of a tank is definitely worth that small extra spend.

A long time ago we dyno tested the difference between 95 and 98 and there is certainly more power using 98.

Even VW, when asked, will tell you to use 98 all the time.

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks all for the input. I will continue with 98 RON. Cheers!

Official answer to the question of which fuel to use

    Thank you for your email.

Volkswagen only recommend the use of 98 or 95 as minimum. We do not recommend any other type of fuel to be used, including E10.
