    Question about tyres

Hello, I've recently purchased a 2021 T-ROC R-Line and I'm very happy with it. It has just 35k km on it and the original Bridgestone tyres which look like they'll need replacing in the next couple of months - guessing I'll be doing about 1k-2k a month. It has the 225/40 r19 wheel / tyre combo on it.

Is it possible to go for a 225/45 r19 tyre to get a bit more profile on it. I personally think the car could benefit from wheels that fill out the wheel well a bit more but haven't really read anything about putting slightly larger tyres on it. Just wondering if anyone has fitted larger/thicker 19 inch tyres and how it went.

Moving to a 225/45/19 will give you a 14% sidewall increase, so id say theres a fair chance you might rub on bumps. A 235/35/19 is a more modest 6% increase in sidewall and 1cm wider tyre.

Up to you to look at the car + wheel setup closely and see if you think a 14% sidewall increase will not foul on anything. If you can fit them, then im sure you would notice a slight improvement in ride comfort.

I did a similar thing a year or so ago with my Audi SQ5 and moved away from the factory size 255/40/21 to a 265/40/21 which was a 5% sidewall increase and they fitted fine, but the tyre shop only mounted 1x tyre first and test fitted it (I knew they would fit because im not the first person who has done this on an SQ5, but they wanted to be sure). Definitely a slightly smoother ride with the new tyres, plus the extra 1cm width looks better on the rim.

Another thing to consider is that by upping the diameter you also up the gearing slightly and alter the speedo by about 3% at 100kph. SO check your present speedo reading on a flat straight road at 100kph on the GPS and see what the speedo reads. By Law It MUST read more than actual speed by up 10 10% + - 4 and must not read LESS than actual speed. I had a Polo that read 7 over and it would have taken Illegal sized tyres to bring it bang on but didnt bother.

Ignore Hillbilly, the resident fun police .... fit whatever you want and what will work for you, especially since you can adapt the car's speedo to other sized tyres.

As an FYI, the T-Roc R runs 235/40/19, so that will fit the R-line too. As a bonus it has a 5.7% sidewall increase.

Actually I couldnt give a stuff what others do but was just pointing out the not so good side of things Yes VW speedos can be corrected I did my TIg with the OBD11. I thought about that after posting But upping tyre size does put more strain on Transmission as it ups the gearing and yes do what you like and its all good till it isnt.

I guess any size thats fitted to the different model is OK but larger than that maybe not

As in most forums differing opinions are allowed arent they????

Absolutely, yet almost every 2nd post from you is about what is not legal in a particular scenario. Most people here simply do not care, and unless you are a lawyer, perhaps refrain from constantly raising the legality (or not) of people's ideas or proposed modifications.

So what you are saying is its ok to promote illegalities on the forum but its not ok to point out the implications of doing so.

I was under the impression that it wasnt the thing to do after a few years ago the Forum nearly got into trouble for allowing posters to post copies of VW maps.

We were told to desist from doing that sort of thing which is no different to promoting illegal modifications and then telling the cops." Oh I saw it on the Watercooled forum so it must be OK"

Perhaps the Moderators are a bit more relaxed or whatever, but Im sure quite a few are not aware that what they are proposing may cost them a lot of money if caught, because they had no idea it was illegal.

I am not saying that at all. I am saying it is not your job to point out the legalities every time. In fact, when you make statements about the legalities and their implications, you are providing quasi-legal advice and in case you did not know, as a non-lawyer, that is actually illegal, and you can be charged for it. Unlikely, yes, but as probable as being fined for a speedo being 1% out.

I was under the impression that it wasnt the thing to do after a few years ago the Forum nearly got into trouble for allowing posters to post copies of VW maps.

The forum does not promote people breaking the law in any way, as it should, it is neutral and does not and has never condoned actions that are criminal. And BTW, actual criminal actions (such as breach of copyright laws) are treated very different legally from having a speedo that is out or some other vehicle modification.

We were told to desist from doing that sort of thing which is no different to promoting illegal modifications and then telling the cops." Oh I saw it on the Watercooled forum so it must be OK"

just LOL ... please stop, what a nonsense proposition. People make their own choices and ignorance of the actual law in any particular matter is not an excuse. A person makes a choice and has to stand by and defend that choice in every single action they take everyday. Trying to blame the forum for their choices will have zero luck with the authorities.

Perhaps the Moderators are a bit more relaxed or whatever, but Im sure quite a few are not aware that what they are proposing may cost them a lot of money if caught, because they had no idea it was illegal.

It is not your responsibility to educate anybody as to the legalities of their actions and as stated before, unless you are a lawyer, also illegal for you to do ....
