Buy whichever 1 you can afford.

The R has a lot more in it than the R-Line, not even mentioning the massive difference in performance.

The R has some serious stomp.

When I bought my 140kw R-Line, the R was still not confirmed for Australia so there was no choice to be made. I've seriously considered trading mine on an R - but in the end went for a stage 1+ tune, a nice intake, lowered and a set of wheels.

If I were buying new today....I honestly don't know. A lot would depend on the deal. I would not be satisfied with the performance of a standard R-Line - the 140kw engine is good, but mine is currently running around 190kw and is a great balance of performance for my needs. A good mate of mine has a R, and while it's certainly faster than mine, it's not night and day.

I don't know current drive-away pricing, but if the difference were around 5 grand - it would be a R all the way for me. If the price difference crept up over that kind of $ though, I'd be looking towards an R-Line and modifying it to be individual. That whole "built not bought" thing.

**Have just looked up retail pricing.....for a fully-specced R, it's around 11 grand more than an R line. Throw a couple of grand at an R Line, and you get 90% of the performance. Personally I could not justify nearly 70 grand for a T-Roc - they aren't high enough quality...

If the price difference is not your issue than the R is a better vehicle. Availability is also in favour with the R.
I was checking out stock availability in Sydney over the weekend and I can pick up a current R in what ever colour with a choice of options immediately.
There is some stock of the R Line around but limited.

Apart from the performance difference, the R has matrix headlights and a larger media screen that would sway me towards it.
However for about $15K difference in pricing that is a fair bit of aftermarket modifications possible on the R Line.

Spend less than $1500 on a tune for the R and you get a genuine sub 4s 0-100km/h car.

The R-Line has a generation older engine now (Gen3B compared to a Gen4) and the changes to it are substantial. Not to mention bigger brakes, better tuned suspension, AWD (Haldex) and gearbox .... (although the DSG as always remains ***** in my view).

There are some crazy good deals at the moment for T-Roc R. VW Australia ordered waaaay too many at the start of 2023 (they secured 1500 plus 300 R Grids) and they’re still trying to move them on.

I grabbed an undriven demo in Melbourne, fully optioned (built April 2023, compliance September) for just under $63k with a 3 year service pack thrown in. Picking up this week.

Too good to pass up at that price!

Thanks for your replies…was considering a retune of the 140 TSI however concerned about voiding the warranty. A follow up question about the effectiveness or otherwise of the Alarms/lmmobiliser on the R? As for the best deal was looking to buy during EOFY sales(May).

The vehicle comes standard with an immobiliser, as for an alarm it is a waste of money. If anyone is going to steal it an alarm won't hinder them nowadays.
You are better off with hiding an apple airtag or two in the vehicle.

I don't know about any better deals come May, there is ample stock of 2023 models around that are drive away now. Give it a month or two what is left will be in a better position to move.
The EOFY deals mainly give you drive away prices. Geared to move older stock that has not had much interest to buyers so as to clear out dealerships for new model arriving. Waiting out for 2024 built models won't see any great deals until later in the year or unless boatloads turn up.

I’d be buying an MY23 if you want a good deal. These are the ones VW imported en masse. Whether they choose to milk the supply over a few months at the current driveway price or discount them even more to clear the stock, is anyone’s guess. You could get a sharp deal in a few months if they have plenty of stock left to clear - keep an eye on Carsales to check numbers. Currently there’s 515 in the country.

They haven’t done the mass import for MY24 and so I doubt you’d see as good a deal.
