Try Bursons, Dayco makes the timing belt kit for these engines as well and the tensioner looks exactly like the one in the picture.

Really! Man I tried VW but they put me onto a VW vintage supplier. I've tried a few other older VW suppliers around sydney with no luck (was told these engines were never sold in dubs in Australia) , and they may just have them at bursons. jeez.. thanks mate. I'll be down there tomorrow.
are the 1.8 16V engines the 'KR' engines and the ABF is the 2.0? What cars were they in? not good on VW history pre 9N3 Polo I'm afraid.

Based on the mention of the 10-8 stud, I'm assuming late.
Apparently, part numbers are as follows:
Tensioner: 051109243A
Stud: N0145931 M10 x M8 x 58mm (discontinued)
Washer: N0122293 8mm x 15mm x 0.5mm (discontinued)
Nut: N01100830 M8 (discontinued)
Probably easier to source a late ABF complete timing belt kit, and take what you need from it.

I'm relying on my memory here. The KR was the 1.8 16V that was in the first Mk2 16V. I'm pretty sure it was never sold in any VW here in Australia. I had one in my imported South African Mk2 16V. It was a very revvy engine with about 138hp but not a lot of torque down low. I replaced it with a 9A which was the US version of the 2.0 16V and was known as the bubble block. If you saw one you would understand why. Due to less aggressive camshaft profiles it only had around the same horsepower as the 1.8 (136hp I think) but a truckload more torque. I believe you could put the KR cams into the 9A head and that gave you the 150hp that the 2.0 litre 16V engines had in the UK and in the later versions in South Africa and also in the 2.0 16V versions of the early Mk3's.
The ABF was a newer version of the 2.0 16V engine and appeared in a very limited run of Passats and also in the Seat Ibiza Cupra
Sport 2.0 16 Valve to give it's full name. It had a longer (taller) block and also had 150hp and also was very torquey. I've had 2 of them.

Umai Naa sorry I should clarify. I was going to change the stud as good practice and incorrectly thought that it was 10mm within the head of my 1.8T 20V BJX. Its in fact an 8mm stud inside and out. The other people who I have seen do this conversion must have all had big port heads and so needed the 10 to 8mm stud

So assuming I can source the tensioner roller (from somewhere other than the states where they want stupid money to post it here), will it just fit straight onto my existing 8mm stud/washer/nut that my BJX already has?
I have a stock timing belt kit ready to go but I have a leaking water pump so I'm fitting a Cat Cams adjustable timing pulley and figured its the right time to convert to manual tensioning while I'm at it.
The tensioners look to be in abundance on Ebay out of the UK for around $45 shipped.

will the tensioner be that part number that you mentioned above or different because maybe I actually need the KR and early ABF tensioner? hmmm are ebay brands trustable for this kind of thing??
