    Roof Racks

Wondering if anyone has experience fitting roof racks to an Arteon? Looking at buying Thule (#1863) racks as it will suit the bike carriers and roof pod I already have but I am worried about them damaging / scratching the roof.
Anyone tried? If so what brand and were they difficult to fit? Please share.

Yakima is also a good choice.

It kinda sucks, but any rack design that has a pad sitting on the painted roof will scratch. You can REDUCE the effect by ensuring the pad and the roof are clean prior to fitting, and always removing the racks when they aren’t being used (because abbrasive grit will always work its way in between the pad and the painted roof, no matter how careful you are).

If you intend on leaving the racks on for an extended period of time, it would be worthwhile getting some paint protection film and applying it to the roof where the pads sit - that will result in the film being a sacrificial surface instead of the paint.
    Cheers

Did you go with racks? Any pics to share? I am thinking of doing the same...

Yep, got the Thule racks, very sturdy and nice and wide. They fit nicely, very snug so shouldn't cause any damage if I am careful fitting them and keep all surfaces clean. They came with some clear plastic adhesive strips but I tried one and it looked terrible so going without.
I have only had them on with 2 mountain bikes, but noticed they are very noisy at speed, probably made worse because the glass of the sunroof lets more noise into the cabin than a steel roof with hood lining would.
I will have to experiment and see how much noise actually comes from the racks and bike carriers and how much is from the bikes themselves.

Thanks for that. Any shots from the side showing how they look above the roofline?

Yeah the racks on my golf R with sunroof were very noisy and with the two bike carriers it was impossible to have the roof open all the way. Too loud.

thanks mate. Not for me, will get an old doona and fold down the seats for the bikes. I am in an underground car park with very little head room so needed to drive to the street to fit/unfit the bikes anyway which was a PITA>
