Turns out it was out of fuel. The needle was in the red, but not on empty (I was on the way to the fuel station). Had the car a week and yes, this is the lowest I've let it go (was part of the first week test to see how many k's I get per tank to work and back - 700 km for anyone interested - 18km each way, driving between 60 and 80, with 6 traffic lights and 9 round-a-bouts).

The road side assistance bloke did a scan, no error codes, checked the battery, which was fine and then put a couple of litres of fuel in and the car started up fine. I drove about 3 km, put in 10 litres of fuel and the car didn't register that at all. Drove another 15 km and filled up the tank with another 58 litres.

I was always under the impression that when the warning goes off, there's about 10 litres left in the tank. Certainly has been the case with all my previous cars. I'll be filling up at a quarter tank next time (when the 65km warning goes off) to see how much fuel it takes. Definitely referring this one to the dealer though, if nothing else, the sensor might need calibration.

    Thanks for the input

So, another little update. Driven about 115 km since last refill and the range is still saying 740 km, and the fuel gauge is still pointing to full. Might give it till 200 km and if it doesn't move, time for a dealership visit I think. Looking very much like the other person's issue mentioned previously.

Yep - that is the exact issue the guy we know is having.

I'm actually recording my km vs the movement of the needle at the moment for him. For what it's worth - I've just done 200km and the needle has clearly moved off the full mark with about 640km range left. When I filled it up on Monday night or so, it was 840km of range with a full tank.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely be keeping a much closer eye on things for a little while too. The needle did move this morning and the range dropped to 720. Will definitely fill up at 650 km, or the first red mark this time and then do some maths to work out if the gauge is totally off or only a little bit.

Guys you need to remember that its going to take your car (computer) probably about 5-10 fills to start giving more accurate data on kms to go before empty.

The issue with the Arteon owner that we know is he has been stranded with an empty fuel tank three times now. When the car runs out of fuel it still shows 1/3 tank full. When he fills it, it shows 600km range and needle is all the way on full, but even after 200km driving it still shows 600km range and the needle is still all the way on full.

So there's some calibration issue there (as it does appear to be out by 1/3).

i don't know if its the case with Arteon, but certainly with Oz specc'ed Superbs - they come with an "extra large" fuel tank.
brochure states 65L tank, and that's normally standard.
however there is an option, in overseas markets, to have an extra capacity fuel tank - adds about 10-15L of capacity.
Oz Superbs gets the additional extra capacity as default. As usual VW have no idea about this, and is reflective in the Skoda brochures they make for the Oz market.

i used EKTA to confirm this.
Standard Fuel tank = OM4 - Fuel tank capacity: Fuel tank
Extra Capacity = 1Z2 - Fuel quantity for initial filling: Increase in initial standard fuel filling

i don't know if the Passat and/or Arteon has a similar thing?

Managed to get it started once and drove into a roundabout, then the engine cut out again and rolled to a stop.

Currently waiting on VW roadside assist to come have a look, 70 minute eta on that. I'll scroll back through this thread to see if someone has mentioned this before in the meantime.
I had a similar incident a couple weeks ago. Decided to see how low I could go on the needle as per the kms left till empty.
Indication said 40kms. I was in sport still and it took a while for the indicator to go from 50kms to 40kms till empty so I thought I’d be right to give it a tiny squirt up a hill.

Lo and behold I ran out of fuel and had to wait for VW roadside to come and give me some fuel.

VW roadside were great btw. Quick to respond.

A shame about the fuel gauge indicator. I could get my Accord euro to 0km left till empty and would be right for a couple more kms. Lol

I had exactly the same issue when I test drove the Arteon at VW. Gauge still showed fuel in tank and gave a 30km range, but car cane to a stop in the middle of a busy road and VW had to come and collect me. Then when I got my Arteon, the first time I put 10litres of fuel in the gauge didn’t respond or the range change. Since having filled the car a couple of times now it seems to be behaving, but after running out of fuel in the demo, I can’t quite trust that digital gauge.

Have to drive to Sydney tomorrow (from Canberra), so filled up before empty this time. The needle was between 1/2 and the next one down. "Refuel amount" was indicating 30 litres. Given its a 65 litre tank, I was expecting around the same amount. First click was after 44 litres...

460 km on 44 litres is about 9.5 litres / 100 km, which isn't far off what the car has been telling me for all journeys. Looks like it's measuring only the quantity in the tank incorrectly, everything else seems accurate.

Sucks not being able to trust the gauge though. Seems one of the things cars need to get right.
