It does seem high - by several hundred RPM. My Mk7 GTI idles at about 800rpm roughly.
Next time you are at the lights, try knocking the transmission into neutral and see if the revs drop to a more normal 700-800rpm.
Just wondering if anyone else that has a MK8 Golf GTI can tell me what speed their car idles at after it was warmed up and stopped at traffic lights for example.
On my 40min commute with a number of longish traffic light stops, it doesn’t look like it’s dropping below 1000 - 950rpm. This seems to make it want to creep forward more when you slow it down almost to a stop. It’s very noticeable on a slight hill when you lightly lift off the brake it feels like you’ve put your foot on the accelerator.
Didn't notice this on my MK7 GTI.

I have had it sitting on a flat driveway idling and it has dropped to around 700-800 rpm after a while.
But when driving it seems to stay around 1000rpm - I think it's 970 on my ODB11 dongle.
Idling at that speed it just feels weird when you creep forward or let your foot off the brake.
I'll give it a go in Neutral on the way home today & see what happens.
With the "chicken nugget" gear selector you sort of forget it's there.

Is there any chance you've got it in sport rather than drive? Atleast on the mk7.5 this increases the idle speed significantly, not sure on the the 8 though!

Had a look with ODB11 yesterday - tested after driving for 40mins.
Idling in Normal drive mode - 950 rpm
Idling in Sport mode - 1100 rpm
Idling in Neutral - 800 rpm
In normal drive mode 950 rpm still seems high to me, It should be more like 800 rpm if I remember from my MK7 GTI.
Interested to hear what other people are seeing on their cars.

Took it to VW Service, they had another MK8 and it was also idling at 950rpm.
So this looks like normal operation.
Interesting that they're running it this high.

When I do a ODBeleven scan it says it's running a DLBA version Engine, so that does look like the previous GTI PP 7.5 engine.
Running at 950 rpm it has this weird pull when you try and stop slowly on a hill.
I also spotted this thread saying the same thing.

But this is a UK forum where I thought they have a slightly different variant of the engine.
