I actually have no problem with the Lambo/Ferrari being there as it's a really good benchmark for other cars like the Golf and Tiguan. You get to see how close you come to super car territory at a fraction of the cost.

For a benchmark yes, but winning the competition No. If they did supercharge that Lambo or make it twin turbo Yes it deserve to win.

But come close to super car territory oh please , that Lambo did not even used launch control and hit 0 to 100 in 3.9 sec, if used launch control expect it to be in high 2 seconds and quarter mile in 10s.

It was certainly an interesting couple of days, there was a new team at Motor running it this year & it was way different to the previous years (we have been to them all).

When we arrived we were told -

"No adjustments to any car - no tyre pressures, no suspension settings, not allowed to lift the hood & even check oil"

So we only had one opportunity to set the tyre pressures & that's it. Because we were running semi slicks and had a set circuit target pressure (and trying to guess what the track temp would be), we set them to 23psi cold.

The track results were very obvious that we got it spot on. The drag results were so / so as we would have run considerably more pressure, so we would have had more top end.

We went to the dyno (chaperoned by Motor Staff) and the Mainline engineers (staff) were running the dyno. Running 23psi on cold semi slicks, they might as well have been completely flat. Todd estimated it pulled 40 - 60 kw out of the Haldex cars that were over 200kw. Some of the big V8 boys running semi's were down over 100kw's.

It doesn't take too much rocket science to add up 0-100 times & 1/4 mile times compared to power output.

No detuning, just regular 98 octane production software. We were running their control 98 ron fuel (Hi Tech) which we had not run before, so we just assumed it was as good as (if not better than) BP 98.

Even if you took out the Dyno's, the Lambo would have won. The Tiguan would have shifted up to 3rd outright.

If they had have ran the Figures 8 & skidpan (not included this year), I think the Golf R would have won outright (based on our previous Golf R skidpan results).

All in all, very happy with how it all went, extremely happy with the Tiguan & how it shocked the entrants. It was awesome hearing the pro drivers talking about it, even after stepping out of the Lambo & Ferrari

P.S. the Lambo did use launch control, they had a heap of launches in it. It also dynoed well down on where they think it should have been too.

    Stage 3+ Tiguan build

Thanks for the feedback Guy. Knowing some of the background as to how the tests were run I can see how having fixed tyre pressures really stuffed things up.

From a readers perspective you are left scratching your head as the figures just don't add up. Hopefully next year they can at least allow pressure changed for each discipline.

One other thing about the article that I don't think gave proper credit to the Tiguan was that they downplayed what a good base vehicle the Tig is to build a performance vehicle on. It was almost as if you throw enough money at something and it's going to go fast.

Anyway it's good to hear what the pro drivers thought of it and for $67k you can have a well-sorted track weapon as well as a family SUV to boot.

Out of interest was the Tiguan down on power compared to the Golf R? Or were they running different turbos?

The Tiguan's always made less power than Golf R's / GTI because of the big gearbox, so we sort of expected that. Also the Tiguan has much bigger tyres than the Golf R, so on a roller dyno you would probably also expect that to come into play.

Yeah I know I've always expected (hoped) for a bigger dyno figure than what I've ended up with when comparing to other similarly tuned Golfs, however the DQ500 must suck out a fair bit more power than the DQ250.

I guess it's a small price to pay for a bullet-proof DSG.... particularly when you're running as much power through it as the Super Tig does.
