What volume do you have it on? Do you get static and other noises?
My BT sounds fine if I keep the volume ~33 or below, which I would say is about 17 on SD, so about half. At this volume I can play rock / metal without it sounding tinny, quality is not great but fair, plenty of bass. My unit's equaliser settings are bass 4, sub 3, mid 1, treble -2.
Regarding iPhone mirroring, iPhone 4 and above and iPads are supported as long as iOS is version 5.1.1 or above. See the connection below:
So yes you do need the Digital AV cable. There's no requirement to use the genuine Apple unless you own an iPhone 5 (in which case you need the Lightning Digital AV). Supposedly non-genuine Lightning Digital AV may damage your phone.
The HDMI end you see above will connect to the mirroring adapter box, which in turn connects to the back of the DNS.
I still need to confirm if the HDMI cable is included - the USB one for Android devices is.
By the way, if you are running Android do check that your phone is MHL compatible:

Your unit sounds quite faulty beyond the white screen issue others are having. If this ever happens again you can disconnect the radio by pulling the fuse, this will reset settings too.
The final production unit is available now for replacement for those with faulty units - however as I said I've not had hands on experience with it yet though these issues should be fixed. If any of you don't want to wait just message me and I can organise the replacement.
