I think you'll find even your most basic phones take 12-18months plus to go from basic idea to full scale mass production. For example, the Moto X that only just got released, has been in the works since before Google bought Moto.
Still, it's bloody frustrating what AS is doing hopefully it will be in our hands very soon.
Will the dns work with the golf 7 and include all current functions? I can't seem to find that information.
Thanks

Based on the completely different physical shape, and that the Mk7 has a lot of tech built into the headunit/infotainment system (and would thus have a completely different electrical interface), it won't work. I was going to say "I highly doubt it would work", but in fact, i'm 100% sure it won't.
Dunno why you'd want to replace the original Mk7 headunit anyways?

To be honest, there isn't (and probably wont ever be) a third party HU for the Mk7, and it's so tightly integrated into the vehicle functions, that your only choice is to get VW Mk7 unit that has GPS and retrofit it. It's not going to be a cheap/easy venture either. I'm assuming that your current model wouldn't have the GPS antenna either so you'd need to wire that in too.
In hindsight, you probably would have been better speccing GPS from the factory.
You could always get in contact with VW parts directly and find out what the parts number is and try and source it that way, but I feel like you'd probably have to activate it in computer too (via a dealer)....

There are already third party GPS units for the mk7. They basically act as an av accessory to add nav to the dumb screen. To say there will never be a third party hu is very naive.

I guess I should have clarified, I meant a full replacement unit, that carries every function the original does. Of course to say 'never' is silly, but it'd take a lot of work to reverse engineer it. You can probably get the generic chinese units right now, but we all know how terrible they are.

I found this. Dunno how good it is, but it looks like it uses the original unit and piggy backs on some functions/buttons to put a WINCE GPS unit in. My guess is to get touchscreen input/button input it is a modification of the OEM unit.
Edit: nevermind, it's just this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/10...AVIGATION.html Piggybacking on the cars CAN connection.
Clever.
