    02A Gearbox with Peloquin LSD

Up for sale is my reconditioned 02A gearbox with Peloquin LSD - $1600. This has only done 6000-odd kms since complete new bearings, seals and Peloquin LSD installed. I am only selling this because I have installed a new gearbox with a more motorsport-oriented (and less streetable!) plate-type Kaaz Limited Slip Diff. There is nothing wrong with this gearbox at all. I have just decided to blow more money on my car, and now I feel guilty and can’t justify hanging onto an expensive “just in case” gearbox.

    - 02A gearbox code “CDA”. It has the same close-ish gear ratios as the 02Js from mkIV GTIs 1st – 5th, plus the 3.67 final drive ratio which only some of the mkIV gtis had – this is the perfect combo for turbo setups pushing good power and I have gone with the exact same combination again

    - Every bearing and seal was replaced just under 7000kms/3 years ago with top of the line parts

    - Peloquin ATB LSD - the newer, better model where the ARP bolts screw straight into the diff housing. This was installed at the same time as new bearings, so only 7000-odd kms ago

    - 100mm output flanges. Note: The CDA is one of the last of the 02As and has 02J bolt in flanges. Hence the Peloquin is actually an 02J unit (the difference is push in vs bolt in flanges). This is better - easier to remove flanges if you ever have to.

    - Expensive GL4 75w-90 Redline oil used and changed very regularly, and that’s what’s in it right now.

Just a note on inter-car/inter-gearbox compatibility. The 02A and 02J family of gearboxes are very similar. I really don’t know why they started a new gearbox code with the 02J considering there is more variation within the 02A family itself than there is between the 02A and 02J. Certainly strength-wise there is no difference. Most of the internals of an 02J have an “02A” part number, and the bearings, shafts, diff, and gear dimensions are all identical. Also I know for a fact that you can convert this gearbox to full 02J-style shifting – the 02J shift tower bolts right in and you can then use it with mk4 shift cables/shifter (and funnily enough the early 02J boxes used the 02A shift tower!). It is however sold with the original 02A shift tower. Also, the mounting points are the same or workably similar between 02A and 02J, but be sure to check your application beforehand.

It comes with the clutch fork too, it’s just not in the pics.
