Unhappy Weird noise on a cold engine when driving off after reversing.

    Hey guys,

I’ve recently started experiencing weird noise when I drive forward after reversing on a cold engine. The noise itself is very hard to describe. What happens is that I get into the car in the morning, reverse out of my car spot, stop the car, engage drive, hit the pedal and at around 12km/h I can hear this weird, very short noise, single knock, like something is locking into the place. It’s definitely coming from under the hood and I’m almost sure I can feel it. This makes me to think it’s something to do with the drivetrain - flywhell? This never happens on the warm engine and it doesn’t happen every time on the cold engine. No other symptoms.

I can only assume this will be a painful process to get it diagnosed by the service as it’s really hard to replicate it, so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem before and possibly got it fixed?

    Thanks!

When mines cold and I reverse out a drive which is on an incline, when I move to D and then coast and roll down the hill (backed off the accelerator) my gearbox/engine sorta makes a couple loud noises (sorta grinding), only happens when it’s cold. I just put it down to being cold and everything’s not up to operating temp yet *shrugs*

Thanks but it’s not that. It’s a single noise, similar to the one when the car locks the doors but it’s different, it’s coming from under the hood and I can feel it, it happens once and won’t happen again until I reverse again on cold but that’s not always the case.
I already accepted the grinding noise on cold as it happens to everyone and according to VW it’s a car characteristic lol. Those noises are making me want to switch to the new 2019 RAV4. It’s pity because I really like this car but I have a feeling that the DSG will break as soon as the warranty is over.

It’s good to see Toyota starting to design interesting vehicles again, but the difference in torque between the two cars is a big drawcard of the VW for me

Someone on the other forum suggested the air-con clutch engaging after reversing. I will take that for now and see if I will get that noise with AC turned off.
