VW Tiguan R to end this year?

News article states that the Tiguan R will cease production at the end of this year.

And as you're aware, we're saying goodbye to Tiguan R towards the end of this year,” said Mr Beckmann.
Volkswagen delivered ... 3400 Tiguan Rs in 2023.

Does anyone know if this is correct as I was planning to get a Tiguan R in the new 2025 design that supposed to land towards the end of this year.

From what I can see the new model Tiguan is currently offered in R-Line versions, not the R.
Much like the Touareg if a R version is to be released it will be a PHEV but there is no information suggesting that is planned.
The new T-Roc model, due next year in Europe, is also undecided on if they will produce it as a R model as PHEV versions are to be released. This is going to be Volkswagen's last ICE new model before they go to some form of electric power from now on.

Volkswagen keeping the R model without it going fully electric appears unlikely, look at Porsche with the Macan and the signal that Audi is killing RS models in 5 and 8 cylinders to become EVs.

That's a shame as I was hoping to get the new model Tiguan R (0-100km/h 4.9 sec) as my last ICE before I move to slower hybrids.

Next purchase I wanted another ICE, then 5 years a Hybrid, then another 5 years BEV (replacement batteries should be cheaper by then).

As the current EV battery replacement cost is +$25K, 2nd hand EV's drop much faster in value than 2nd ICE vehicles.
