Updated first post with VW (and some others) moving to 5 Year Warranties

Previously VW stated:
--------------------------------------------------------------
For as long as your warranty, we provide 24-hour roadside assistance, emergency accommodation, rental vehicle and towing as well as household emergency assistance.
Roadside Assistance under your Volkswagen Assist membership is provided by Allianz Australia. Whenever you request roadside vehicle assistance under your membership, you’ll be making that request to them.
--------------------------------------------------------------
It seems VW may start charging for Roadside Assist
Service Initiated Roadside Assistance (SIRA): Roadside Assistance | Car Breakdown Cover | Volkswagen Australia
--------------------------------------------------------------
If you service your Volkswagen at an authorised Volkswagen Dealer, you can receive 12 months Service Initiated Roadside Assistance**.
To be eligible for SIRA your vehicle must be in a roadworthy condition and have the Volkswagen standard scheduled service carried out by a participating authorised Volkswagen Dealer.
Following the service schedule ensures your vehicle receives the love and care it deserves. As such, vehicles presented to an authorised Volkswagen Dealer will be eligible for a SIRA Policy up to 42 days after, or 2,500 kilometres above the service schedule milestone. If previous services were missed or completed outside our network, you will also be eligible when you return to an authorised Volkswagen Dealer for a standard scheduled service.
** Authorised Volkswagen Dealers may charge a service fee to activate your SIRA Membership.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Buyers may need to start including SIRA memberships in any new sales contracts

Yes I'm pretty sure most of the vehicle manufacturers that offer roadside assistance just have a deal with the state motoring association to provide the service.
I haven't looked into the details (probably should) but I know RAA has a number of levels of roadside assistance with the top level including accommodation and greater towing distances inclusive.
I imagine roadside assistance for new vehicles is probably down to flat tyres, flat batteries and flatbed trucks (as well as the odd splash of fuel).

Toyota just went five years with a twist, money back if the vehicle has major issues within sixty days of purchase and repairs have not been done. I am sure there is more in the fine print, that is only a rough summation.
With VW and Toyota both moving to 5 Years as of 1 Jan 2019, the remaining car brands are looking sheepish stuck on 3 Years.
Hyundai no longer has any marketing advantage advertising 5 years warranty.
My bet is Hyundai will shortly move to 7 Years now that Toyota has moved to 5 Years least they start losing market share.
Updated the list now that Nissan has moved to 5 years and Haval moved to 7 years
Kia ready for 10-year warranty
“We’ve done the sums; if we get seriously challenged, we would move as quickly as possible.”
Hyundai studying eight-year warranty to reclaim ownership bragging rights
"Hyundai is studying an eight-year warranty in an effort to arrest a sales slide in Australia’s softening new-car market."
Hope they all move to 10 years ...

Looking to buy a second hand tig which is a late 2018 model. The seller is saying the car has an extended warranty which covers it till 2023 but has no paperwork to prove it. He said the will look for papers, but is there a way I can check with Volkswagen directly if I have the VIN?
Yes, give your local dealership a call
Thanks!
Yes VW can confirm a vehicle has 5 year warranty. When I bought my 2018 Allspace I called VW and they confirmed it and were happy to email me so that I could have something in writing.
