‘Major failure’ (major problem) has a legislative meaning under Australian Consumer Law

    What is a major problem?

A product or good has a major problem when:

it has a problem that would have stopped someone from buying it if they’d known about it
it is significantly different from the sample or description
it is substantially unfit for its common purpose and can’t easily be fixed within a reasonable time
it doesn’t do what you asked for and can’t easily be fixed within a reasonable time; or
    it is unsafe.

A service has a major problem when:

it has a problem that would have stopped someone from buying it if they’d known about it
it is substantially unfit for its common purpose and can’t easily be fixed within a reasonable time
it does not meet the specific purpose you asked for and cannot easily be fixed within a reasonable time
    it creates an unsafe situation.
    ----------------------

Does what some people have posted as issues be fined as a Major Problem as defined above ?

Tiguan needs a new (under warranty) steering control arm

    Discover pro screen internal crack?

i think the key works here are “...and can’t easily be fixed within a reasonable time”

I would think that parts which can be ordered and replaced within a couple of weeks is reasonable. Other opinions may vary.

    10 years would be nice.
But really how likely is a major defect to show itself in the 1st 60days of ownership ? Maybe 6 months would be a more realistic time period.

Interesting, I would like to think they have joined the rest of the motor industry and sometime next year introduce a 5 year standard warranty for all cars.

I think they will eventually go that way - Holden tested the water with a 7 year warranty in a couple of promotions before committing to 5 years from 1 July

Sold and delivered between 1st Oct and 31st Dec. Damn, seems like it doesn’t apply to my current order.

For VW to be fair, they should have included those who purchased 2 - 3 months before the announcement (Jul - Sep)

Hope it goes well for you
