    Tiguan Towing Experiences

    Hi everyone,
Just weighing up options for a new touring vehicle with an ability to tow a medium van up to 2,000kg's.
On paper the Tiguan appears to be capable of 2500kgs with a maximum ball weight of 200kgs.
Perfect for a Euro van or a hi-tech "trim" Aussie built van.

    For those towing:

    • Which drive-train do they have?
    • What size / make of van
    • Fuel Consumption when towing ?

Are you looking for an occasional tow tug or something to lap Australia in?
The diesel versions would be good but I'm not sure they sell them anymore, in which case the 162TSi would be my pick.
Allspace may be slightly better with it's slightly longer wheelbase and extra weight...

The manual diesels or traditional torque converter autos were the preferred in the gen1 for towing.

The 140TDI does look like it may be coming back into the lineup shortly as there’s new approvals for these for both standard Tiguan as well as Allspace. It’ll be 7 speed DSG for both of these vehicles.

Otherwise you can find some of these around secondhand - though Allspace 140TDI are a bit harder to come by.

I wouldn’t want to tow 2000kgs too often with a dsg vehicle. Especially if suburban based and/or there are steep driveways involved.

I’ve towed my trailer (maybe 500-600kgs) and my driveway is only a bit more than slight and reversing the trailer up it has the trans slipping something chronic- I’m a decent reverser, too.

I also don’t think the Tiguan is ‘tough’ enough to be dealing with the suspension load and the ‘stretch’ effect of the trailer during accel/braking long term. That statement holds true for most passenger cars these days though.
