..and substantially better looking to boot - particularly the execution of the rear, pun not really intended.

But they need to do the LWB version too. The Tiguan is useless to anyone who carries more than a pair of shoes in the boot unless it's in LWB form. There's just not enough room in the standard one. Yes I'm exaggerating a bit, but still, we'd have a Tiguan instead of a Passat if the Tiguan had more space.

Are you talking about gen 1 or gen 2 as the boot space seems pretty big to me in the gen 2

Even compared to Gen 2 the Passat is quite a bit larger. The kicker for me is the length. The Passat is around 190cm from the rear of the boot to the back of the front seat. Tiguan is 160-something. This means I can load skis or a surfboard (usually around 180cm) in a Passat down the centre of the 40:20:40 split rear seats, have two rear passengers and a comfortable driving position. I can then lock the gear securely in the car. This isn’t possible in the Tiguan (requires a diagonal loading or roof racks etc). Even the current Touareg has a shorter load area than the Passat. The Tiguan also has that annoying hard load cover like my golf. The Passat however lacks the 7sp wet DSG and a few other things I’d like to see. Each to their own. I’m going to wait and see if I can afford the new Touareg which may solve for everything.

I looked at the MY18 Tiguan. There's not enough room for just our great dane in the back! In the Passat, I can put the great dane and our pram in the boot. This means we have the baby seat, enough room for another adult and space between them on the middle seat, or just a clear back seat other than the baby seat.

Another thing when you've got length - leg room! I'm 6'2" and didn't want to be stuck with another Commodore wagon just because it's one of the few cars with enough leg room. Adjusting the seat for me driving is my test. I then get in the back seat behind the driver. Not a chance in the Tiguan. Fine in the Passat wagon.

I also personally find the seating position in a car driver's seat, rather than an SUV or 4WD driver's seat far more comfortable. Especially on the long drives.

It will be our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee replacement. If it's as good as or better than the Volvo XC90 that is.

This is discussion about how if there is a Tiguan R, it better be on the LWB platform so it's actually a properly usable SUV in terms of cargo space.
