Hmmm that sounds pretty dodgy. The seller should have known the condition and made it clear that it was suitable for upgraded internals only.

As you said lucky the car was where it was when it went and that no major damage was done. A bit of a set-back but that's one of the risks when using second-hand parts.

    On-wards an upwards.

I was pondering if I should install it, the IS20 was already out so decided to install it and see how it went.

Once installed oil run through it and car idling or reeving could not hear any rubbing so thought all good.

First baseline dyno run at 23psi car made 225kw@4 wheels beautiful power curve, then bang!!! and the car stalled!! Restarted the car and huge rattle from the turbo, removed the turbo and exhaust wheel was hanging loose... Luckily it happened on the dyno and not when I was driving the car otherwise might have dropped a bunch of oil down the exhaust and have to find the exhaust wheel in the cat, also could have put bits of metal through the intercooler and into the engine.

Had to put the stock turbo back on. Now in the process of claiming a refund through paypal for the turbo as clearly there was some damage to it before it was sold......

Hunt now begins for a replacement..Have found a few options so IS38 still on the cards.
No góod - better luck with the replacement.

Keenly watching, and planning for the time to replace our aging Mk1 Tiguan.

Hi Inasnt, sorry to hear that mate, that is some pretty rotten news. Hope your refund with PayPal and the seller goes smoothly. Good to hear that the car/engine is still ok and that it didn’t cause significant damage. If I see an Is38 at a good price I’ll let you know.

Have found a few secondhand options, also looking at new one to avoid possible failure again.

Got a full refund on my broken turbo, have a IS38 G version from a Mk7.5 going on early December, turbo install will have to wait as will be away for work and on holidays over the next few weeks...

Was considering a TTE475 which was going cheap second hand but I would be too tempted to add a cooler, Water/Meth Injection and other mods to get the full potential of the TTE if I installed it...

That’s good news on both fronts! Sounds like it’s coming just in time for Christmas. Be good to hear your experiences with each of the stages including the latest is38 upgrade.

I’m going in for my 2 year service next week - with around 14 months and 15k km on the IS38. It’s been smooth sailing, after getting over the initial niggles with the O2 sensor CEL.

So much good info on this thread. 👍
Now that I have a new gearbox I will get the Turbo upgrade prioritised. So far it’s just APR tune, res delete, and turbo elbow, next is the DSG tune and then stage 2/Turbo and tune. Love this car, what’s everyone’s take on rubber? Need new boots and interested in hearing experienced opinions. Thanks

Yeap, we are lucky in Australia to get the EA888 gen 3 - 2 litre TSI engine producing 162 kw and 350 nm. This is the engine that is shared with the golf gti. In terms of gear box we get the 7 speed DSG DQ500 MQB that is also used in the AUDI RS3 and TTRS. Launch control is standard and puts a smile on your face every time. A fantastic platform for modification.

I just became sad... lol. Also found out APR has no tune as of yet for the Gen3.B either.
