Thread: Tiguan IS38 and Big turbo upgrades

  1. #361

I would personally spend timing look at torque vs RPM.

Use that as a way of determining how a car should drive, don't be fixated over MAP vs. RPM.

You can easily get a turbo on earlier but produce low torque and when you compare that to a setup that might make a bit less boost at a specific RPM however making more torque, the one that makes less boost and more torque would be so much nicer to drive.

Hence I keep emphasising to many not to be so fixated by positive pressure by X rpm, there are so many different strategies these days to get boost earlier, e.g. cam timing, low ignition timing, lean spool, etc.

Would be good if you can overlay one of the graphs to the snail graph... Peak Torque is showing around 3000rpm..

Dosepipe, with what you know about the 2.0 TSI engine, do you really think the snail turbo could be tuned to have peak torque closer to 3000rpm without sacrificing top end?

Top end won't be affected, the turbo can breathe so much air, by only playing with cam timing sub peak torque you only affect that area.

With the wonders of technology, you can change cam timing IN/EX based on multiple dimensions such as MAP x RPM x IAT x (many other variables). So really depends on your custom tune, playing around with cam timing takes a very long time especially when both the intake and the exhaust cam timing can be manipulated.

More IN cam timing, more overlap more torque then turbo will come on earlier, but you need to pull back the advance as you reach peak torque (and if possible on these motors) retard the intake towards the red line to continue making power. Then then you need to manipulate the exhaust cam timing too.

Then to futher play with all of that you could lean spool the car to get the turbo to come on earlier, when it comes on earlier you get more torque, it's all a fun balancing act

FWIW, I mainly tune SR20 **** boxes and the odd RB20/25 1JZ - however the same methodology stands.

MY RB25 had HKS adjustable cam gears to allow some adjustability. Can you do the same with these engines just with the coding and no hardware changes?

I will ask the tuner who did the snail tune on the MK7 GTI about what adjustability with cam timing / overlap etc can be done to bring the power on earlier pros / cons etc.

That is correct, modern motors have solenoids or actuators that allow full adjustability of the cam IN/EX, hence often term "variable" they're controlled generally through PWM.

RB25s back then had a somewhat rudimentary method for "variable" cam timing, it was 20 advance when on or 0 degree advance when off. Hence you can hear it click on/off when you jab the accelerator. Most tuners enable them to help with driveability and also increase VE/torque when required and shut then off once you approach max torque i.e. the max VE of the motor. Some lazy tuners leave them on all the way, a bit similar to how a fixed static adjustable cam gear on a RB26 would work.

One down side of getting the turbo on super early is you can run into compressor surge, however you can kind of combat that by reducing cam timing advance. It's a fun balancing act.

Was talking to tuner about the snail turbo tune on the MK7 GTI and said its not possible to bring that turbo onto full boost before 4000rpm, still have 3500rpm left in the rev range.

Tristan, this thread has gone luke warm for a while. Very exciting to see the intercooler, hybrid and hpfp come together. I look forward to your review and comments post your install on the 1 April.
