Thread: Tiguan IS38 and Big turbo upgrades

  1. #131

"if" I were in the situation to fit a new turbo to the daily (which would be never lol) I would find a blown IS38 (which is pretty much a Borg Warner EFR turbo) and get it high-flowed by a turbo re-builder and fit slightly bigger wheels on both the compressor and turbine side with a more robust CHRA containing some what ceramic ball bearings (this is starting to sound like a GTX lol)

I'm not a fan of Borg Warner turbos, as soon as you over speed them they poop out turbine wheels.

Looking at the IS38 turbo, which houses a ~58mm (exducer) compressor wheel, you could easily mill it out to fit the likes of a GTX2863 which "has" a 63mm exducer but actually is a bit bigger due to the extended tips on the blades.

Also this option works out cheaper than buying off the shelf stuff.

I’m still looking to find the comparison data between the various options however I suspect the larger turbo options will spool ~500rpm later.

It’s this info I’m chasing at the moment to try and help with working out which way to go. I don’t really want to sacrifice daily driving. I know an IS38 is a safe route but also is going to have it’s limitations.

IS38 is twin scroll, our turbos are open scroll.. there's the 500rpm you'll get back from going bigger

I really don’t want to kill the daily drive-ability of the car but really wondering if there’s something a bit better than a stock standard IS38.

Id keep the turbo swap options limited to a bolt on solution without modifications to fit. How about a TTE610R (IS38 frame/housing) It’s 10% off today on USPmotorsports website and would work well with a custom tune.

    TTE610R Upgrade Performance Turbocharger for Gen 3 - MK7/8V - TTE610R-Gen3 - 20403

Or a CTS BOSS solution using the proven garret gtx gen 2 turbocharger rated between 400 -600 Hp depending on the model.

    CTS Turbo MQB BOSS V2 MK7 GTI/Golf R/8V S3/8V A3

Or a hybrid IS38 from DBV2, Harding Peformance/OEM+, REVO ETR, Littco, HPA Motorsport.....there are so many to chose from. Probably best to talk to your preferred custom tuner to work out what hybrid IS38/ GTX turbos they’ve done custom tuning for and can stand by the product, reliability and power vs. buying a product that your tuner may not have tuned before / doesn’t support or isn’t able to optimise the performance of the hardware.

Agreed I'm looking at direct bolt-on solutions only.

TTE610R is for 600+hp applications and requires a fully built engine (stage 4) to cope with the levels of boost. Thanks for the suggestion but this one is off the shopping list

Yes that's a possibility but it would have to be the GTX2867 rather than anything bigger. I'm looking at outputs 450(ish)p as I'm looking to keep the car for a while and don't want to be running things too hard.

It's just trying to sort out the wheat from the chaff and yes finding a decent option that is supported by my tuner (they'll pretty much tune any option). The problem with any power level is that you get used to it and then want more...

    Tiguan TCU - be aware

So I learnt yesterday that the Printed Curcuit Board (PCB) for the DQ500MQB BOSCH is the same as the TEMIC DQ380/381! When communicating with this unit, some tuners haven mistaken our DQ500MQB BOSCH box for the DQ381 based on the same PCB. That’s one for the back pocket.

I would be looking at a GTX2860R Gen 2, a GTX2867R Gen 2 would affect your stock like boost threshold.

I've done a few GTX2867R Gen 1 on 2x SR20s (I know different motors) but they don't wake up till close to 4k rpm. On a modern motor, with DI, twin scroll, higher compression, advance valve timing, etc. I don't see it coming on any earlier than 3.5k rpm.

    On a GTX2867R Gen2, there's about 550hp worth of compressor flow.

Ok then strike that one off the list.

The one that I’m considering quite seriously at the moment is the TTE475.

It’s an update to the TTE470 except with diverter recirc instead of BOV.

A good compromise would be the new Gen 2 GTX2860R, although it's advertised with a 60mm exducer, we all know the new aero billet wheels all run extended tip blade which makes them bigger than say an old GT compressor wheel.

GTX2860R Gen 2 has a compressor flow rating of 475hp, I would dare say this would be an amazing turbo if anyone is bored enough to find a blown IS38 and get a turbo builder to machine the compressor and turbine housing and fit this CHRA into it.

Unrelated but kind of related, I've got a GTX2867R Gen 2 S15 going on the dyno sometime next year after the owner replaces his gearbox, I put a base map on for him a few months ago to suit the cams, fuel system, turbo with pig rich AFRs and crap all timing and still that turbo managed to sheer 3rd gear LOL. I've done 3x GTX2867R Gen 1, IWG on E85 with stock manifolds and they all consistently pushed 270~280kW at the rear wheels on E85 and about 1.7bar of boost.

TTE475 sounds good, early spool characteristics is encouraging......
