Question Tiguan Highline 162 Rline vs Mazda CX-5 (new 170kW/420Nm Twin Turbo)

After paying a deposit 5+ months ago and having the VW dealer re-neg on providing me a new Tiguan Highline TSI162 Rline, and with new reported issues of the Tiguan DSG transmission, I am now considering other options.

I want a powerful turbo petrol SUV preferably with a 6SP/8SP auto (no dodgy DSG / CVT).

Unfortunately Ford is not bringing the 2.6L V6 Twin Turbo Edge to Oz ... WTF!

The new Hyundai Santa Fe only comes in dirty diesel and the front Santa Fe looks really ugly.

That leaves me with the new CX-5 (170kW/420Nm 2.5L Petrol Twin Turbo) due to arrive in Oz the next month.

Have people compared the VW Tiguan Highline Rline (162kW/350Nm) vs Mazda CX-5 (170kW/420Nm) when deciding to buy a new car ?

    Cheers

None of these are "new" reported issues as most of them are from 2017.

In my opinion as well most of these are from people who are more familiar with an automatic gear box rather than a DSG.

I get you had a poor experience with the dealer screwing you but feel you would be better looking at a Mazda forum to get advice on an alternative rather than attempt to trash a car that in my opinion has no more or less issues than any other car brand.

I am not trashing VW (no 5yr standard warranty & 8 SP), just considering my options as my original order feel through.
Maybe it is a sign from God

The issues with DSG are driving Toyota, BMW and other brands to all dump DSG in favor of 8 SP TC.
Does this mean BMW is trashing VW by dumping DSG ??

BMW M to dump dual-clutches, go auto-only within a decade

Where is the Mazda forum ?

I wouldn't know where a Mazda forum is as I bought and recieved our VW's.

And I've never heard of Toyota using a dual clutch however I am sure you will find a forum posts somewhere to prove me wrong...

I guess what annoys me is when you make sweeping statements about a car you don't own nor drive consistently enough to pass judgement on.. it's like having an opinion on international affairs but you don't know what's actually going on.

Sure, get on ask if anyone has compared the two brands or cars.. but there is no need to make false statements about reliability issues on a something you have no direct experience or understanding of.

I ordered a CX5 before the Mazda dealer screwed me around on delivery etc so I got my deposit back and have now a Tiguan and much happier with the choice!

the CX5 petrol needs a turbo because it’s so under-powered in NA form. In saying that... read some of the responses in whirlpool. While it sounds great to have the 2.5 turbo engine. People don’t rate the Mazda6 as a rocket ship so putting it into a larger car isn’t going to help the matter

I test drove a VW Tiguan Highline for 2 days. I didn't experience any DSG issues and it drove fine for me. In fact I liked it so much I placed an order the following week (5+ months ago). However I doubt VW would have given me a Tiguan that had DSG issues to test drive. The danger with DSG issues is VW appears to always deny there is an issue. Having read other people's posts that swear they have real DSG issues, they sound genuine to me. Just because the issue maybe 1:100 and VW deny there is an issue doesn't mean it doesn't exist for those affected.

"Originally developed for performance cars such as the TT, Volkswagen Golf R32 and Bugatti Veyron, the technology is gradually being withdrawn from high-torque machines in favour of smoother and more reliable torque converter transmissions."

I have owned 2 VW's before as well as other cars, so I do have some experience with what goes wrong with cars and what to avoid to buy
(i.e. cars with DPF, CVT, DSG, Sunroof, < 5yrs warranty)

As for commenting on international affairs, this may be for you. Spot the difference.

I found the rear legroom and boot too small for my requirements as much as I loved the feel of the CX5

Don’t get me wrong, the CX-5 is a nice looking car and the dash is finished nicely. For me, that’s where it stopped though. The leather seat finish was sub-par; stitching didn’t look straight, leather didn’t seem laid properly and the seams were messy. One of the most common interactions we have with our cars is closing doors, I know it sound gimmichy however there was no “nice thud”, something I’ve experienced with VW and other brands. The CX-5 was absolutely an option for us however when we saw it in the flesh we were really disappointed. It is a massive shame they they didn’t finish the rest of the car in the same way as some of the other components. VW dropping the TDI is a massive bug bear, I ended up with a Wolf Tig though, bye fuel.....
