Thanks for sharing this! No wonder the sound coming out is so muffled! Was there the same fibre insulation at both ends or just the one?

Oddly enough it looks like it's just on one side going by the soot markings on the section that was cut out.

So got my Golf R rear box fitted up, looks perfect, just as it should have been.
Went with no resonator and there is no drone but I don't really like the sound. It's hard to describe what I don't like about it.
I've got a controller coming for the valves and I'll get a tune in a couple of weeks so will live with it for a while to see if I can define my dislike.
