Most of the drone would be from the lack of a resonator and the long unmuffled pipework.

With low flow and noise (vibration), you end up with a standing wave and through superpositioning you're amplifying the noise.

Muffler tips facing backwards or downwards would not contribute to drone.

The flaps help to reduce noise by creating a restriction at the rear muffler and potentially affecting the wave form.

Drone on mine quietened a fair bit by removing fakes and extending the tips, but a resonator is needed as well.

Since you've kept your res, do you have the valves permanently opened as well?

Looks like folks on here mainly have a "res delete + closed valves" combo.

I have a Powerflow side entry muffler, not the “R”, with two resonators. Standard resonator plus a Vibrant 17930.

I will try & make a video tonight of the sound with my setup, which is fitted with a MK7.5 Golf R + Resonator Delete + valves open

Makes sense. Which makes me wonder whether there is unnecessary drone in the current SQ5 with its (unacceptable) fake exhaust trim and downward pipes.

Zero drone, naturally, just the relatively quiet burble of the Audi turbo six.

I won't disagree on the fake exhaust trim piece, but it's pretty much a standard across the board for new cars with the odd few exclusions.

Is there any difference between a Golf R wagon or hatch muffler and piping
I assume the wagon has some extra piping length but the mufflers are the same

Does it matter which you get for this excercise?

Yes they’re totally different.

Mk7 Golf wagon has twin mufflers

I tried to make a video from inside the car, but my phone doesn't pick up any sound at all. I got my wife to drive it up & down the road while I stood outside & it sounds wicked. Sounds heaps better from the outside than what it does on the inside.

I'm contemplating putting teh resonator back on to improve the cabin noise but I know that will effect the sound fro outside...tough decisions to make lol

If your phone is connected to your car bluetooth maybe it doesn't record audio as expected. Try disabling bluetooth. Would be good to hear outside audio of the car with the valves open.

OK I will attempt it again & try to get some outside recordings too. I can also confirm 100% that the valves of the MK7.5 are in the open position as per this photo I took of mine.
