Can confirm that the valves are in an open position, the guys fed a camera down the pipe to confirm as some of them were saying they would be closed & others saying it is open & will only close once it gets power - sorry if this has already been answered earlier...

I opted to have the tips chopped off & for the pipes to angle down like the stock so not to change the look of the rear. Sounds really nice but I notice a lot of droning at low revs. Anyone else experiencing this? Should I put the resonator on or you think we have to have the tips coming out the bumper rather than staying behind it?
    $400 for the muffler
$250 for cutting tips & install
The actuators need to have power on them to be open? Normally they would be closed I thought..

If yours are open all the time then this could be the cause of the drone...

What are the differences in Mk7 vs 7.5 R rear mufflers?

Can confirm, valves open = drone. As it does in the golf, which is why being able to control is a must.

Having the tips behind the bumper increases the drone.

My experience with the build went like this:
    1) Took exhaust to shop, we both didn't anticipate the tip extensions. They had 2 staff sick so couldn't complete on the day. Welded downward facing tips to the Golf R muffler. This setup resulted in a hard core droning and booming. Wife and therefore life was unhappy.

    2) A few days later took the car back to the shops, extended the tips (with valve actuators in place which were closed by default) to the rear bumper. This resolved ALL droning/booming and the car sounded like a standard Golf R with a res delete.

I suspect the downward facing tips causes the sounds to reverberate under the rear of the car resulting in drone.

Makes sense. Which makes me wonder whether there is unnecessary drone in the current SQ5 with its (unacceptable) fake exhaust trim and downward pipes.

potentially the internals of the SQ5 muffler are different to the Golf R?

Was this with or without the resonator?

Am curious to find out what putting the res back in will do when it comes to nullifying the reverb with downward facing tips. Resonator vs. down-facing who will win?? 🥊

Most of the drone would be from the lack of a resonator and the long unmuffled pipework.

With low flow and noise (vibration), you end up with a standing wave and through superpositioning you're amplifying the noise.

Muffler tips facing backwards or downwards would not contribute to drone.

The flaps help to reduce noise by creating a restriction at the rear muffler and potentially affecting the wave form.
