    Tiguan allspace 162tsi Fuel consumption?

    Hey all,

Picked up a 2018 Highline 162tsi allspace recently.

Lovely car by all means, but the fuel consumption is abysmal? I’ve taken it to VW since it was still under warranty but they brushed it off and said car is perfect.

I’ve been getting 350-400km per tank, using U98 and normal driving in suburban areas and some highway driving. I have my wife and baby in the car, so you can guess how slow I’m driving too.

Put all settings to Eco mode, no difference, fuel is still die scheiße. Is this fuel consumption normal?

Mind you, I’m coming from a diesel Tiguan which was getting 700-800 per tank with the same routes.

Yeah, that sems quite high.. what's the average L/100km work out to? (ie. could be a smaller tank).

Off the top of my head, my wife's MY22 140TDI Tiguan Allspace typically consumes ~6-9L/100km and usually gets ~700-900km+ "per tank" on average. Where my tuned/gas-guzzling Arteon typically consumes ~9-18L/100km, but gets ~500-600km per tank on average - larger tank I assume.

A mate picked up a MY2023 Allspace 162 R-Line in the recent months and he's get, based on his long term trip meter 11.5L/100 around Melbourne.

On average how many litres are you refilling each time? The fuel tank capacity is rated as 60L so if you are putting in 50 to 55L I could understand why it might the high but if you are closer to 40L per fill, it would seem about normal in my humble opinion.

Fuel consumption one of the reasons we have 2 diesel Tigs.

    By way of comparison:-

    Wife's 147 TDI over 22,000k and 34 fills. best 5.46/100 worst 8.11L/100

My 147 TDI over 7,000k and 10 fills. Best 5.58L/100 and worst 7.20l/100

Been refilling 55L each time, mainly cause I fill up the moment it hits the first red line.

When I fill up full, the car estimates I have 590km til refill but so far only getting 350ish. It also estimates I’m using around 15.6L/100km.

My other question to all of this is, how do I investigate this further or deal with a problem, especially with VW brushing me off, where else to turn to?

Edit: also another thing, I have start/stop turned off due to needing a new AGM battery. Not sure how much that changes things

Well that sounds far too high for consumption.

I'm presuming the 15.6 is from the car's long term average. That would probably be closer to 16.0 to 16.3 actual.

The start/stop should not be adding that much to the consumption BUT the AGM battery may present another issue. It is my understanding that Tiguans are fitted with EFB batteries and it is recommended to replace like for like. At least both out Tigs have EFB's.

I'd be sticking with VW trying to help explain why consumption is high however you will need to have detailed records of the type of travel and fuel use over a period of time AND may need to see a lawyer in consumer law, if you want to really get assistance from VW.

For the record the fuel figures I quoted in my earlier posts on our diesel consumption were from the actual fill to fill method and the 'estimated' consumption was about 0.5L/100 lower.

Edit:- I forget to ask when you purchased the 162, did the previous owner modify the vehicle in anyway?

Gauging fuel consumption by the "tank" is most inaccurate and silliest way of doing it. If you want an accurate way fill it at a local pump, take the odo reading. When it gets down, fill it at THE SAME PUMP ( not one at the same servo) and do the math. Do this several times and you will get the true figures. By "the tank" can be like this
I used to get 1000km out of a tank in my TDI Passat I got 1300km out of a Tank in my TDI Landcruiser so is the Landy more economical then the Passat. Going by "the tank" method it appears so. BUT Passat has a 60 L tank and Landy has a 145l tank.

I used to get 11L/100km out of my 162 around town and about 9.5 on a 200km round trip on highway. 15 is far too high. I had S/S turned off permanently and it didnt make a spot of difference.

You can change from an EFB to an AGM battery with no problems as long as you CODE IT IN AS FLEECE in the settings. If you havent coded it you should or you will ruin your new battery as its charging rate will be all up the ****
