Tiguan All Terrains

Looking at getting 5 x 17in VW Tulsa Rims.

Interested in 235/65 R17's primarily and most interested in BFG KO2 though will settle for other tyres.

Is anyone out there running 235/65 R17 OR 235/60 R17 all terrains or other tyres and can you confirm if they do or dont clear the strut etc?

The Tulsa wheels (like most factory wheels) have a weak offset which means they sit inside the guards and limit your ability to put a wider tyre on. Im not sure that you will be able to fit a 235mm wide tyre on those rims without hitting the suspension. You may need to consider either spacers or a different rim (probably an aftermarket rim) with a better offset and also may as well go wider such as 7.5" which is better suited to a 235mm wide tyre.

"I got tyres that match the circumference of the standard tyres- as close as possible. 225/65/17. I think they’re 1-2mm wider. So not real benefit. Plus I lowered the pressure to 14psi, lowering the car a cm or so.

I think 200mm is the factory clearance. The rear exhaust components, appear to be the lowest points.

On the return trips, there were no signs of the car rubbing its underside on the raised humps in between the wheel tracks, either. The bumper bar(s) are the only things that touched dirt. And only one of those was truly the cars ‘fault’ the other times were the speed I hit them at- necessary, that caused the scoopage/scrape."

Just be careful off road with a TIG as I saw a post about a guy who hit a big clump of stuff in a paddock and ripped out the oil sender or its wiring loom in the front of the sump and did a lot of damage. I bought a big undertray that went right back to the crossmember and so protected the sump. Unfortunately they dont seem to be available any more and I spent 2 hours looking for it this morning.

Personally in a unitary bodied car like that I wouldnt be going anywhere near some places I took my 100ser Landcruiser

Probably a better idea to fit a steel or aluminium engine guard that protects the sump rather than a plastic one. As convenient as the plastic might be, the actual level of protection vs a metal one is much greater:

I do agree but this stuff wasnt exactly "plastic" I put some extra air holes in it on opposite side of centre and had to cut it with a grinder It was about 5mm thick and as hard as metal and didnt bend at all. As I wasnt going bush it was more than enough.
