OK booked an appointment with the dealer the other day and went back in today. Took the car for a drive with one of the master techs and he agreed with my observations that the haldex is locking up the rear wheels at low speed. He checked the wear on the rear tyres and said to keep an eye on the rear tyre wear at first service. If it's excessive then they may look at taking it further at that time.
He did make note of it on my file so at least it's logged with VW if it ever raises it's head down the track. Probably not a lot more I can do right now unless tyre wear seems excessive or something in the transmission breaks... however given the number of cars out there with similar programming I expect if it was causing major mechanical issues we'd have heard about it for now.
I still don't think it's fantastic but perhaps it just a compromise in terms of traction off the line and tyre wear at low speeds. I'll just put it down as a characteristic of the vehicle and how the factory has decided to set this up in terms of Haldex engagement.
