Thread: Rear Tyres Scrubbing/Haldex Engaging in First Gear

  1. #31

I'll fiddle with the haldex adaptation and set it to Quiet, see how that goes and update you Tigger73.

OK booked an appointment with the dealer the other day and went back in today. Took the car for a drive with one of the master techs and he agreed with my observations that the haldex is locking up the rear wheels at low speed. He checked the wear on the rear tyres and said to keep an eye on the rear tyre wear at first service. If it's excessive then they may look at taking it further at that time.

He did make note of it on my file so at least it's logged with VW if it ever raises it's head down the track. Probably not a lot more I can do right now unless tyre wear seems excessive or something in the transmission breaks... however given the number of cars out there with similar programming I expect if it was causing major mechanical issues we'd have heard about it for now.

I still don't think it's fantastic but perhaps it just a compromise in terms of traction off the line and tyre wear at low speeds. I'll just put it down as a characteristic of the vehicle and how the factory has decided to set this up in terms of Haldex engagement.

In relation to this post, I was having a fiddle with my OBD11 and logging haldex activity. Something definitely happening when taking off, voltage increasing from 1.9v and blockage % increases.

Yes I did some similar logging too.

What I was trying to see was the left and right wheel speeds from stationary (1st gear) when turning. The outside wheel should track a larger arc and therefore run at a higher speed.

What I suspect is happening is that the rear wheels are running at the same speed (locked) in first gear. Unfortunately my VCDS is not able to scan fast enough to prove/disprove this but if you can log see both speeds and the Haldex current you’ll hopefully be able to see what I suspect is happening.

Put a visual marker on both rear tyres and get two cameras and count the turns. I suppose you could do it with one but it would be possible to overlay each view with two??

My diesel Allspace has the same strange noise and feeling at low revs, medium engine load, up to about 40kph. After that it gets drowned out by engine noise.

The loan Petrol Tiguan I have, has it worse, with the accompanying tire scrub and at any speed(coz the engine is quieter. I can play it as an instrument with the throttle. Most noticeable in the 1400-1900rpm range. All gears and speeds.

Bad impression, that’s for sure. For me and my passengers. It sounds terrible and is not good for the driveline, having it binding up like that.

Not sure we're talking about exactly the same thing. This is really only a low speed (1st gear) cornering issue. It's usually only under 20km/hr when you have a fair amount of lock on the front wheels that it's noticeable. Turning left around a corner from a T junction for example.

I also get a fair amount of front tyre scrub on full lock doing U turns but that's a separate issue.

    FWIW, I had a SQ5 for a week.

The Haldex engages much earlier and much more aggressive than the Tiguan when there's any form of steering angle detected.
I wouldn't be too concerned to be honest, another option is to set the adaptation for the Haldex to Quiet

Doing a full lock u-turn in a SQ5 is interesting, it nearly wants to skip/hop like a car with a 2 way mechanical rear diff

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. If it’s how these things are engineered now I can kind of accept it but I still don’t understand why they do it.

Perhaps it’s the new gen Haldex unit and how it operates with the rear diff getting locked.

For what its worth, my Gen 1 Tiguan just came back from a Haldex / DSG service, and now sounds like its locking the rear wheels during tight turns. It's quite noticeable, wasn't doing it before it went in for a service, and I'm sure is awesome for tyre wear too. I'll be contacting my mechanic next week, if I find anything I'll advise here, although I'm aware we're discussing a later model vehicle.
