    Phone mounts

Though I'd share this. They're very expensive but not a bad solution if you're looking at mounting your phone somewhere. They're custom designed for each specific make/model of vehicle, so fit better than a generic holder.

    First component:
    17-17 - Tiguan - Volkswagen - Dashboard Mounts - Device Mounts | HoldMyPhone

Then search for the device holder part:
Buy Phone Holders Online, Mobile Holders, Phone Cradle | HoldMyPhone

    Phone mounts

I've used these mounts in three previous vehicles, and can confirm that they're good quality, solid products.

But, for the purposes of the Tiguan, doesn't Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirrorlink, etc render this sort of setup a bit superfluous? Surely you'd just plug your phone into the USB port near the shift lever, leave it sitting in the centre console, then activate CarPlay and not actually need to look at the phone itself.

Yeah, I've been thinking the same. I guess until I get the car and get used to Android auto (and any limitations) I won't know if I'll want it mounted or not.

I had the same thing for my MK6 Golf although got it from ProClip but the same thing: Volkswagen Golf (GTI) VI 2009-2012 ProClip Angled Mount - ProClip USA

I had it along with their iPhone cradle with lightning connector and found it fantastic. It was so easy to just slip it into the cradle and it would then be connected to the stereo and charging. I was planning on getting one of these for the Tiguan, especially so I could easily connect my iPhone for CarPlay however the issue I have with these is I don't think either of them is quite the right mounting place. I think to the left of stereo is a bit to far away since it is such a big screen and I really don't like vent mounts.

I think a much better placement would be to the left of the climatronic/aircon control panel as that will make it easier to get the phone in and out. I also think it will make it a bit more discretely placed and not so in your face as the other ones. I don't know if the mount by the stereo would also work there, will have to do some measuring otherwise was thinking of emailing them to see if they would consider doing one for there.

I tend to agree with your thinking in regards to the placement. Your suggestion of the placement near the climatronic controls makes sense, would mean that the cabling would be much neater as well, with direct access to the USB port in the centre console. I get really frustrated with cables hanging down the dashboard.

I feel your pain, I hated the placement of the MDI connector in the centre armrest console in the Golf and having to route the cable to the cradle mounted next to the stereo. Much prefer the USB port in the centre console, just want to get rid of the cable I have laying around at the moment (I manually plug the phone in then just sit it in the centre console) and get a proper mount then hide the cable.
