You shouldn't see any oil on the turbo inlet. If you do then you have real problems as you're getting oil coming through the air intake/filter.

What we're talking about is on the other side of the turbo going to the intercooler. I'll have to check the stock pipework that came of when I changed over intercoolers. I think there was a smear of oil there but not massive amounts.

Any oil in the intake will always commence prior to the turbo (and quite often be visible on the turbo inlet) because the crankcase breather ventilates into the intake tract after the air filter, after the airflow sensor, but prior to the turbo. The crankcase gasses (which contain oil vapours) are dumped into the intake tract on the low pressure side of the turbo - so the gasses are vented into what is effectively a negative pressure area

Anyone up for catch can group by? lol

I do like the Spulen Catch can, as you can run the factory engine cover, factory airbox and to the untrained eye looks like a factory item

Thankfully the E288 diesels don’t need one, but if my wife decides to keep her Passat comfortline post the end of its extended warranty, it’ll be getting a good quality catch cab for sure (along with remove/degrease/refit the intercooler).

edit: of course, petrol engines are inherently less susceptible to carbon buildup in the ports (diesel egr issue) but with the front mounted intercooler on the petrol models, it’d still cause problems over time IMO without a catch can

This is what my reply to tigger was going to be. Without a catch can there will alway be oil at the turbo inlet so it can be combusted, oil at the turbo out is just going to end up in the exhaust.

Catch-can on my skyline caught a crap load of blow-by.

I find with VW they seem to all breathe quiet heavily, I assume the oil control rings are somewhat gapped quite wide.

My freshly built RB25 motor with top/bottom rings gapped 0.005" doesn't have much blow by at all (gapped it a big large on purpose, planning to squeeze in over 2 bar of boost)

A bit off topic, but here's a progress shot of my sietbok LOL

    Normal...
Get a cheap oil catch can and some run some heater hose from intake and PCV for a DIY option or get a Racingline kit for near on $1000...

I got the burger motorsport and it's just a $20 AliExpress can (bit disappointed when I searched it after) so don't bother with brand names unless you go with racing line tbh.

    Oil residue in intake pipes

Do this is what I bought off AliExpress. Going to build my own setup. May add the Afrika plate to the setup. Else just going to connect the Oem pcv outlet pipe to these pipes. Mount can on front right side. And see how it works. Sum total so far. US$55.

Loads of options on AliExpress. Get that this was the best for the prices. Got black obviously.

Got the nylon as braided hose and -10AN fittings to replace the cheap garden hose piping.

I had worst experience with items from AliExpress... so will always avoid them. I don’t trust their Quality (China made (mostly things are) there is no quality control.
