Does anyone know the actual clearance requirement for the Tiguan allspace on 235/55 18 (or was it 235/50 1? I found the below on Amazon, whilst there are some reviews having concerns with quality I figured for the 2-3 trips a year up fallscreek should be fine? I’m going to pull the trigger if someone can give me some accurate measurements, and happy to rent the chain out for fellow melbournians, I figured if the chain ends up breaking after 1 season, $50 bucks a trip is not bad, it’s costing our family a insane amount to go to the snow, $50 is literately pocket change….
Why have you opted for these chains? They are going to cost you just under $200 bucks, aren't there local mobs that can provide you with similar chains with the added bonus of fitting them before hand on your car ?

You are exactly right, I ended up going to Thomas town, and a local supplier fitted me with 9mm chains, I got some precision clippers out to measure the clearance of my Tiguan, it’s 13.6mm the 12mm was touch and go, but the 9mm chain was perfect.

They said it’s rated the same weight tolerance as the 12mm

Where abouts in Thomastown?
What wheels did you get the chains fitted to 18 inch or 20 inch and I'm assuming for the front wheels on the Tiguan?

If you're reading this thread and need a solution for your Rline. Take a look at my classified ad here: VIC Set of Snow Tyres on 17" wheels for VW Tiguan 2017+ including set of snow chains (vwwatercooled.com.au)

Bad news is that the K Summits are now banned in all of Victoria and not just Hotham - the regulations were updated in November 2020 it seems. (Snow chains for Disco Sport MY17 | Ski Forum - and confirmed with Falls Creek Resort today that they don't comply)

I see there were some earlier posts from people running only with diamonds on the back. Is anyone able to confirm that they have done this more than once? Are there any potential haldex issues with doing this? (I've read of haldex potentially locking up but not sure if that applies to our systems).

I'm thinking of running the K Summits on the front and getting some diamonds for the rear which I see was suggested as a previous fix for Hotham (I have brand new K Summits sitting here unused after last year's cancellation so I may as well use them and I have to get some diamonds to be legal - no point selling the K summits so may as well use them). Has anyone here actually run with this setup?

Can anyone see running chains on all 4 wheels causing issues with the haldex ? (thinking I'll get 12mm diamond chains which is the same size as the ice-breaker plates on the K summits so hoping that would prevent any potential wheel size difference problems).

Cheers
So I read this update (thanks EveryTwoYears ) just as I was receiving the K55s I bought online, and as a result of this update I decided to return them.

I managed to avoid needing chains the last couple of years, going up in other people’s cars.

But now I’m back to needing a solution!

So I thought I’d bump this thread. If anyone has any more recent solutions or interesting updates, please let me know.

If anyone has chains/winter tyres they’d be open to sharing/hiring to me, please let me know too!

My plan otherwise is to try to get Thule XG-12 Pro 247, as these were checked and fitted to my car a few years ago. But if I could get my hands on a better fitting diamond set or also some K55 K-Summits, I’d be keen to try those!

Your best bet is to get a second set of 17in rims with perhaps some AT's on them and snow chain those. Its the only solution I've found. Good news is there's plenty of people offloading 17in Tiguan Tulsa factory rims for aftermarket onea and IMO they look pretty good, have the correct PCD, load rating and offset to work on our cars.
