We might get it but I highly doubt it. And it would most probably 2018. Some people can't wait that long and the R line with a decent tune would come close to this already.

Yes well the video has quad tips and a slightly more aggressive exhaust note but I'd expect a Tiguan R to be a bit more raucous with some decent DSG farts to be honest.

What's the price difference between Tiguan 162TSI R-Line and Passat 206TSI R-Line?

I reckon it is $5,500 to compare the Tiguan with the Passat wagon - for that you're getting the 206 drivetrain, more room (I assume?), and the virtual cockpit.. but happy to be corrected on those points.
I think the R-Line Passat looks pretty smart, and for me personally has a slightly nicer interior design (obviously subjective). It has gone to the top of my list for next time around based on my need for more space over the 162 Tig. But I have a big soft spot for fast wagons.

From VW Website for Post Code 2000,
Tiguan 140TDI R-Line fully optioned Drive Away price is $63,824
Passat 206TSI R-Line fully optioned Drive Away price is $68,204
Guess Tiguan 162TSI will be dearer than Tiguan 140TDI? I'd go Passat 206TSI R-Line then.

It could also be a mule for the Tiguan coupe which people are speculated to be launched in 2018. I read somewhere there are whispers that the coupe will have a true "R" version.

I guess it depends on what you are after. The Passat is a large car; I have never driven one but a mate was looking for a wagon and took the Passat for a test drive but found it rather boring to drive, said it felt like an old mans car, so ended up getting a Skoda vRS wagon instead as he found it more fun to drive. Over here the difference is also about $5k for similar spec (both with the Active Info Display/Virtual Cockpit) however the gearbox in the Passat is only the 6 speed DSG so I assume it is only running the DQ250 while the Tiguan 162TSI R Line is running the 7 Speed DQ500 which is a much stronger gearbox.
Personally the Passat is too big for me as I have limited space to park in the carport so the Tiguan is an ideal upgrade from the current Golf.
Even though I am coming from a Golf R, I don't know if I have much desire to go with a Tiguan R if they do release one. One of the main reasons I upgraded from a GTI to the R originally was to get the 4Motion which you get the the Tiguan R-Line anyway. There doesn't look to be much changing in the styling for the R from those shots, other than the chrome mirrors and chrome strip on the front lip plus the quad exhausts (which would be nice). The only thing extra might be some upgraded more bucket seats for the R. The 162TSI should hopefully be pretty quick anyway and if I need more power can always give it a tune. Since it is taking as long as it is just to get the R-Line ones in, I would imagine if we do ever see a Tiguan R it will be at least 2 years away if not more so the warranty on this one would almost be up so can start tuning and upgrading then. Would imagine it wouldn't be too hard to get somewhere near the same power probably for less that paying for the R when it comes out.

Agree in relation to the Passat being a bit uninspiring. An R-Line Tiguan makes a real statement, where as the Passat R-Line is very plain. A 162TSI is going to be quick enough for me. One question on the tuning - I had heard that the 162TSI and 132TSI are the same engine, just that the 132TSI is de-tuned. Does that leave much room for further tuning on the 162TSI? I really don't know much about this stuff.
