There are a number of tuners out there, local and international brands. Best advice I can give is to ensure that you get local support with regard to the tuner of choice, it is true Guy Harding did much for the APR brand in Australia, however APR LLC wanted to remove the middle man and make it cheaper for the end consumer. In terms of adapting tunes for the local market and fuel, I’ll let others be the judge as to whether the tune is optimal and whether the off the shelf tune is performing as well or better as other tuners. From my experience, I have been satisfied and happy with the performance of APR tune and the local support network that remains and never had issues with the off the shelf tune. If there are issues with a tuning file, we live in a time where files can be reviewed pretty quickly and updated by APR LLC (USA). Hope that helps advocate for a free and competitive market.
Our cars are still detuned.
Read this wiki article about Research Octane Number (RON), Motor Octane Number (MON) and Anti-Knock Index (AKI): Octane rating - Wikipedia
Basically the US fuel ratings are in AKI which is the average of RON + MON and is lower than the equivalent Australian RON value for the same/similar fuel.
So if you're looking at the APR website figures their 93AKI numbers are pretty much on par for our 98RON fuel numbers.

For this thread we are discussing the effect of local fuel on tunes (particularly APR and Tiguans) and performance which has nothing whatsoever to do with sulphur levels, which is an emissions issue. I do note that the 2nd article from MB was written in 2012, ie; 6 years ago when we still had a number local refineries with higher sulphur levels.

Thanks Tigger.
Have you tried launching with the DSG in tiptronic mode ie gear shift to the side, and then shifting gears with paddles? I haven’t tried this in the GEN2 yet, but I found that in my GEN1 this was the quickest acceleration. I would be interested in other people’s experiences.
I’ve done a few manual launches but found I always got a bit excited and shifted too early. Launching in S was a lot more predictable and given most of the runs I was doing for comparison I was looking for consistency rather than the best time.
