Harding Performance (ex APR distributor for 16+ years) did a lot to build the APR distribution network in Australia. This included getting APR engineers out to do file development for a couple of weeks a year.

Having a local distributor that stocks hardware locally, does product development for the local market, actively markets and promotes the product and provides local support in business hours doesn’t come free and this did add to the price of the product.

There were still a lot of people that were prepared to pay for the backup and support of the dealer network. Unfortunately this local support network and hardware stocking layer was removed a couple of years back.

There are many people that were/are unhappy with the way Harding Performance was treated and how the business that they had built up over many years was pulled from underneath only weeks after winning APRs global top distributor award.

So there’s a number of people who don’t agree with the business ethics of APR. There are certainly other choices in the market and I would encourage people to explore these even including the new Harding Performance brand OEM+. Not that I’ve personally used it but I do believe in what Guy Harding does and he has been a long term supporter/contributor to this forum.

There are a number of tuners out there, local and international brands. Best advice I can give is to ensure that you get local support with regard to the tuner of choice, it is true Guy Harding did much for the APR brand in Australia, however APR LLC wanted to remove the middle man and make it cheaper for the end consumer. In terms of adapting tunes for the local market and fuel, I’ll let others be the judge as to whether the tune is optimal and whether the off the shelf tune is performing as well or better as other tuners. From my experience, I have been satisfied and happy with the performance of APR tune and the local support network that remains and never had issues with the off the shelf tune. If there are issues with a tuning file, we live in a time where files can be reviewed pretty quickly and updated by APR LLC (USA). Hope that helps advocate for a free and competitive market.

This also limits the engines that some manufacturers bring here and the level of tune. Do you wonder why the Golf R is detuned to 206kW when the rest of the world get 220kW? Temperature may be a factor, however the biggest factor (that the car companies don't say) will be the poor fuel quality.

It's not a myth. There's a heap of articles on our low fuel quality standards. Here's a quick selection:

Off the line both cars with LC, we found it was even until the legal freeway limit. On a roll using manual paddles (sport selected) at 60km/h, the new tig walked him by over a car past 100km/h. I think the weight of the 20” wheels might be offsetting the power gain claimed by APR. Might be time for an IS38 swap to relive good ol K04 times........
Where did you get it done and what was the cost?

The 20's would not be that much heavier than the Golf R 19's..?

    Our cars are still detuned.

Read this wiki article about Research Octane Number (RON), Motor Octane Number (MON) and Anti-Knock Index (AKI): Octane rating - Wikipedia

Basically the US fuel ratings are in AKI which is the average of RON + MON and is lower than the equivalent Australian RON value for the same/similar fuel.

So if you're looking at the APR website figures their 93AKI numbers are pretty much on par for our 98RON fuel numbers.

For this thread we are discussing the effect of local fuel on tunes (particularly APR and Tiguans) and performance which has nothing whatsoever to do with sulphur levels, which is an emissions issue. I do note that the 2nd article from MB was written in 2012, ie; 6 years ago when we still had a number local refineries with higher sulphur levels.

I got the tune from VW Park in Nunawading.

It was during the 12% off sale, best to contact them direct about pricing.

In terms of wheel weight not sure. If anyone has weighed the stock r line 20” wheel and tyre chime in.

In terms of performance, if I get a chance to vbox I’ll let you know. My guess using LC prob mid 5 to 6.

Do you guys launch and just accelerate in S or do you manually shift ?

When I’ve done it I found that S mode was the way to go. Though if you find the power tailing off towards redline you my find that shifting slightly earlier is better.

    Thanks Tigger.

Have you tried launching with the DSG in tiptronic mode ie gear shift to the side, and then shifting gears with paddles? I haven’t tried this in the GEN2 yet, but I found that in my GEN1 this was the quickest acceleration. I would be interested in other people’s experiences.

I’ve done a few manual launches but found I always got a bit excited and shifted too early. Launching in S was a lot more predictable and given most of the runs I was doing for comparison I was looking for consistency rather than the best time.
