I remember now why I noted "DO NOT DOWNLOAD TO C:/. as it was nearly full. I had to use my external drive D:\
Then, when unzipped, on D: it caused "all sorts of problems" so I noted delete it from D:\ afterwards.

Sorry to confuse anyone. I left off the first part of my note in post #229.

The VW head unit is a “Discover Pro (Generation 2 GP)”, Audi’s is “Audi Navigation Plus” They are equivalent .There’s a PDF of instructions from VW in the PC which I have edited. An app called Discovercare could be useful in the future if obtaining the software from the sources below draws a blank.
ONLY EVER USE a Class 10 SD card. .exFAT formatted. Safe eject the one in the car. Do a full backup of it to PC. Then delete the files from the card via an exFAT format.I used a "Kingston Canvas" SD card in the drive-unit slot over the glovebox and you might find it there.
Download the appropriate VW/Skoda/Audi file from the appropriate site or if not allowed, as a starting point try Map update? or

The map download sites can be taken down so be prepared to hunt around.

THIS is the version I did 1/2/2020 successfully. http://vw-mapscdn.tdd.adacorcdn.com/...S5MIBH3_ROW.7z
The VW, Skoda and Audi maps are identical, however the Audi map is region specific, i.e. only the Australian/New Zealand region, & only contains data for that region so you are not downloading 20 plus gb. …. See post #12 . Know also that Audi Navigation Plus = VW Discover Pro (Generation 2 GP). For Skoda & Audi, to download you must supply VIN numbers. Be careful with the AUDI versions as the Oz/NZ one may not suit the Discover Pro head unit.

. Look for an Australian/NZ one and get it if available. DO NOT DOWNLOAD TO C:/.as it might be nearly full. Instead. download to D:
You need to know that at first you seem to get TWO files & the first cannot be opened or scanned by Virus Total or Malwarebytes. Then notice a second ZIP file still downloading & possibly taking THREE HOURS. That’s the one you want. Unzip the file on D:/
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO "PRUNE" OUT ANY FILES OR THE INSTALL WILL NOT WORK.You MUST keep the LOT including o.s. I tried & failed.)

Always use the “Safely eject” feature.
Then copy the contents onto a new (fast) 32GB SD card (exFAT format). I used a "Kingston Canvas" SD card in the drive-unit slot over the glovebox and you might find it there.
Now LOCK the card (push switch down).

Then delete the unzipped files from WD external drive D:\ as they are huge & cause all sorts of problems.

Click it into the car glovebox device. Turn on the ignition but turn off lights/fans etc. headlights off (rotary switch at O) Safe eject any other SD cards.
Touch Menu/Navigation/Settings/Software version & Update,or hit the SD/USB button and it shouldn't take long to pick it up. If it keeps searching, cancel and redo.
In Feb 2020 a search began and a message appeared "Available data: NavDB Version 2020"/[NEXT]. The update began with a progress indicator running at 20% per 10'. At 100 % I waited patiently a couple of minutes & "Software update Complete OK" appeared.
Installation may require more than one attempt. The upload takes a bit, so make sure your battery is full or you have a charger attached or it'll drain quick. You DONT have to load it all in one go as if you turn the car off while its loading it will take up where it stopped later. "

You are making a range of mountains out of a molehill
We have been d/loading maps for 10 years and dont need to do all that carry on.

What about people who only have a C drive.
I posted the easy instructions above and have never done it any other way.

Ive never locked an SD card in my life and all work.
Turn engine on if you are worried about the battery. A lot faster than finding and hooking up a charger.
As far as deleting the zip file off your HDD thats rubbish as I have about 4 different maps on mine including some I got from Skoda and have NEVER had any trouble.

Only trouble comes from using flaky Apple products

Im fairly OCD but would never go to all that trouble its just not neeeded

I believe you off course Hillbilly, but in fact I forgot about my download experience on 1/2/2020 and today I went ahead and downloaded to C:\ and it failed because it filled the drive.

As for why the old unzipped files caused problems on my big external D: drive I cannot explain but all was well after I deleted them.

All my gear is Microsoft not Apple.

The update I did in the car on 1/2/2020 was painless without the engine off but I copied and pasted what to do in case it faled from posted experiences of other people. You might have been lucky.

    Keep well.

No luck in it. Perhaps you should do a cleanup on your C Drive like temp files, temp internet files etc

I run a 500gb SSD and only use it for Windoze and everything else is on my 2TB D drive and backed up to a 4TB backup drive Plus a spare E Drive and I have 3 Externals.

Regularly clean drives and run checks on Registry and broken shortcuts etc. Dont have troubles that way

Duly noted. Yours is certainly bigger than mine My C: is only a 118gb SSD but D: is 298 and only using 10.6Gb so I don't know why it palyed up with the unzipped map files. I clean up regularly (daily) with CCleaner but I haven't done Disk Clean-ups for a while so will do.

Do you keep your backup on one of those externals & keep offsite in your vehicle? They make good wheel chocks.

Nope hidden in the house but where i live its fairly hard to get access to.

Prefer to use $20 wheel chocks rather than $200 HDDS

Is this new update bigger than previous files?
Ive used the same Sandisk 32GB thumb drive for all my updates over the last 2.5 years and this time it won’t fit on the drive
It says I’m 302 mb over
I reformatted a couple times and still no go, so ended up partitioning some space on a 2 TB drive and worked fine

Just annoyed that the drive I have used for many years now no longer is big enough

Yes it is slightly but I used the same SD card Ive always used. What did you format it as Fat32, EXfat or what

My Card says its 31,725,076,480 Bytes
    29.5GB
    320mb Free space
    Capacity 29.8GB
    Fat32

    High 90 was 31,328,977,091Bytes or 29.1gb

So new one is 700Mb larger but it still fits on my card
Must be the way you are formatting it

You arent using a Devils Spawn MAC are you

Same issue with me too. Can u elaborate on how you suceeded please. Instead of the SD card, did you use a 2 TB USB stick?
