Ordered: 2017 build date Tiguan 162 TSI Highline with DAP in Tungsten Silver and rear luggage tray. ETA: late April / Early May. I did not have to wait. I took delivery on 11 March 2017.
I've received conflicting information. Every dealer, bar one, that I've spoken to say you can't extend the factory warranty if you didn't purchase it when purchasing the car. The other dealer told me that you can get an extra 2 years factory warranty ($1500 each year) but it just needs to be bought prior to the end of the 3 year factory warranty ending.
So what have other people been quoted for extended warranty when getting it just before their 3 years is up? Is it factory or "aftermarket" through one of the other big insurance companies?
I spoke to the dealership today and they told me that my car is now due in April instead of May. Apparently the dates in the NADCON system bounce around a bit so you just need to keep checking in with your dealership every couple of weeks until the car is built then you can track it yourself with the VIN they supply.

The story I got from my dealer was that the manufacturer extended warranty is only available prior to purchase ($2000) but that you can purchase an extended warranty afterwards for a bit more.
The difference is that the one purchased with the vehicle sale is an extension of the manufacturer warranty (from 3 to 5 years) whereas the one purchased later is provided by Allianz, not vw.
To me that's a pretty big difference and I'm not really sure if there's a difference in what's covered and what isn't but find it hard to believe there isn't one.

Interesting on the warranty stuff. The dealer I spoke to just told me that if I wasn't sure about paying for the warranty up front, then I could always add it later. If adding it later means it's via a third-party then I agree that it's very different and I probably wouldn't go down that path. So, I'd probably want to test drive a 162TSI and then decide whether I'll pay for the warranty up front for my car. I'm planning on keeping the Tig for at least 5 years, if not more.
The length of warranty is an are where VW are falling short these days, in a market where 4, 5, and 7 year warranties are becoming more common.

I purchased the Allianz extended insurance for my MK6 GTI, had no problems with them - when it came time to make a claim VW would fix the car and then claim Allianz on my behalf. Shop around though, I paid 1600 when other dealerships were offering 1800 to 1900 for the same thing.
